Why not make enquiries where you live now and get what you need?

Exclamation Traveling to Gujarat and Marashtra (3/16/07-4/1/07)--vaccines

Hi, all,

I am traveling to Mumbai and Mandvi, Kutch, Gujarat, in the spring to visit my boyfriend's parents. I will be staying with his aunt and uncle in Mumbai and with his parents in Mandvi.

His father, a doctor, recommended that I get inoculated against Hep A and B as well as typhoid and take anti-malarials throughout my stay. Two questions:
1. Is anything else necessary?
2. I made an appointment with a doctor specializing in international travel for Feb. 6. Is this too late, given my 3/16 departure?

Thanks very much!

1/ I would also get a Polio and Tetnus booster if you have not had one in the past 10 years.

2/ A bit tight for the Hep A/B ... I would get an appointment now. In the UK the accelerated Hep A/B programme is Day 0, Day 7 and Day 28 (This gives about a years cover) followed by one on day 365 for 10/20 Year Cover.

Twinrix (Hepatitis vaccine) - available in India?

Hello, simple question: Is TWINRIX available in India? It's the Hepatitis A,B vaccine. Do you know if it's cheaper in India than in Europe (here it costs 750 rupees per shot). THANK YOU

Thank you Sanjay, just one thing - I already had the first shot of Twinrix. So I should remain with Twinrix for the next two shots. Please can you find out about that product. I really appreciate it.

No you don't have to remain with Twinrix for the remaining shots, but my local clinic recommended that I did.

But make sure you get the correct number of Hep A and B's and at the right time intervals if you want full cover.

Again speak to your local Doctor or Travel Clinic.

I called my GP yesterday cause I need my shots updated. He said Typhus, Hepatitis A+B and Tetanus is required.

Polio, Cholera, TB, Meningitis and Diphteria isn't required and there is no Yellow Fever in India. Rabies will only be given if one is actually bitten.

You should seriously consider several that are not required. If you haven't had a polio booster, you should get it. Polio is still endemic in India.

The pre-exposure rabies is a good idea as India has a huge rabies problem. It's expensive though. If you are bitten in an unprovoked attack (you weren't petting a sleeping dog, rather an animal charged out at you), you would only need 2 post-exposure rabies shots, available in India. Without the pre-exposure, you need 5 shots and very quickly.

3 shots of anti-rabies vaccine are indicated on days 0, 3, 7.
Sometimes 2 more on days 14 and 28, depending on risk assessment by the treating physician.
In India, each dose of the vaccine costs between Rs 200 to 300 depending on the type of vaccine. (There are several different types).
Regarding the dog, it has to be watched for 10 days for any abnormal behavior, before ruling out rabies.
