Vaccination Advice...

I am going to India for 4 weeks in February. Can anyone advise of what vaccinations or medications are required / suggested?

My doctor advised I get the works ; Hepatitis A, B
DUKORAL ( for traveller diarrhea)
Anti Malaria Vaccination
Anti Typhoid Vaccination

I don't think I need all of these. I am going to Delhi and Punjab ( City )

Yep thats' a pretty standard list of vaccinations you need for India, you should get them!!!
Incidently the Malaria isn't a vaccination it's course of pills which you should start before you leave for India, your doctor wil advise you exactly how far up front you should begin with this. They have to taken for the duration of your trip and for some time after you return!

I'm suprised he didn't recommend the triple dipthria/thyphus/polio shot but maybe you've had a booster in within the last 9 years???

Do a search on vaccinations here on IM there is a lot of relevant info in the archives!

Hi Ndhillon. If you are going to be mainly staying at your relatives house in Punjab then you don't need the Dukoral. Most doctors in Canada will give you Doxycycline capsules for malaria. Hepatitis vaccination is recommended for everyone these days even if a person is not travelling to India.

I think they may be covered by plans in the US. I got Hep A and B shots two years ago for my Southeast Asia trip from my regular doctor, and they were covered. I had to go to a different doctor for typhoid vaccine, but it was covered as well. I'm going to take Lariam for anti-malarials, but there's a generic that will be covered for cheap. Yeah, I know, but I don't get weird dreams on the stuff. I am sun sensitive, though, so I'm going to pass on the doxicycline!

I'm due for a tetanus booster as well.

Dukoral I have not heard of! Hmmm. I was just thinking of bringing some Cipro for the G.I. issues.

Another note: Get thee to the doctor NOW if you're doing the shots for Hep. I think one or both may need to be given 4 weeks in advance for effectiveness, and one or both need a second shot in a few months. Also, some antimalarials (or all) need to be taken in advance of your trip.

Read this site carefully:
