I went on a sea-survival course once. Although everyone there that day was a yachtsperson, it was a pro course for merchant navy and oil rig staff. Everything from flares to how to get an unconscious person into a liferaft. Really good stuff.

At the end of the day the lecturer 'sincerely hoped it had been a complete waste of time for all of us' .

my office building is one block away from new york's so-called "ground zero," from where the second plane was watched zooming over adjacent buildings to it's tragic destination.

we no longer roll our eyes and wearily make our way to the fire exits for fire drills, something we used to consider one such complete waste of time.
