mira4bai, mine has been classified as severe, I 've got 4 asterisks (max.) next to the parasite whatever test. You get a 17 day course, the first 3 being the heaviest medication. If there is a bright side to this it's that your fever gets unbearable at approx the same time once every 48 hours and you don't have diet restrictions after the first 3 days of medication.

get well soon pooch!

I have yet to find a pharmacy here that can get hold of the typhoid oral vaccine. Problems with distribution. So it look like I'll be going with just a positive attitude as my shield. There is no risk with cooked food, right?

Oooh Pooch that sounds like zero fun, well something for all of us to look forward to if we are caught with our pants down.

Krishnika, don't risk it, get the Typhoid injection, make sure that it is fresh, this is what we have here in Australia, no oral offered and as far as tropical illnesses are concerned Aussie is on top of things. Cooked food can still be risky not necessarily from Typhoid though, bad food cooked will kill you 'Salmonella', Typhoid and ice, fruits and vegetables, boil the ice before you use it if you wish, doesn't quite work does it.

It didn't occur to me that the oral vaccine would be hard to find, and now with public health I can't get an appointment with the tropical disease dept (the only way to get a vaccine other than tetanus and Hep A) before I leave next week. It's perhaps possible through a private doctor, although I don't know how many of them keep vaccines in stock.....

Most of our private Doctors have it on hand, any place that has tourist coming or going will have it in the fridge, I suggest that you ask around, it cost about AUD $60.00 so be prepared and I would suggest in the thigh or buttock, not the arm.
Good Luck
