Treatment for diarrea - experience w/ Ciprofloxacin/Tinidazole combo?
In McLeod Ganj the last 2 weeks after 4 months in Thailand. About a week ago I got diarrea and after 3 days decided to go to the pharmacy (pharmacist is supposedly also a doctor). He prescribed "LUCIPRO-T" tablets, a combination of 500mg Ciprofloxacin & 600mg Tinidazole, one tablet 3 times a day for 5 days. Today is my third day (condition is improving) but yesterday I developed a skin rash. At first I thought they were mosquito bites, but now feel certain they're a side effect from the medication. I googled the antibiotics in the combo and discovered that skin rash and hypersensitivity are possible side effects. I returned to the phamacist today, told him about the rash, and at first he told me it was not from the medication. After telling him what I read online, he suggested I stop the antibiotics and he gave me an ayurvedic medicine, ANTI-MOT PLUS which I will try.
Has anyone else had any similar experiences with the Ciprofloxacin/Tinidazole combo? Thanks |

which of the two antibiotics has the side effects? Do you know what kind of infection you have?
When I had a giardia infection, I had superb results with just plain tinidazole, one dose of 2mg and the day after my stomach was well again. But before I knew about tinidazole, a doctor in a hospital in Udaipur prescribed me a different antibiotics which I had to take 3 times a day during 5 days. I felt like crap during the treatment and two week later I had a fall back because that stupid doctor forgot to tell me that I might have to take the treatment two times! So I asked google and found the fasygin tablets (just plain tinidayole, by pfizer, but I guess the brand does not matter) |

from what i've read, apparently both Ciprofloxacin and Tinidazole can cause similar side effects (rash, sensitivity, headaches, etc) so i have no idea which one is causing my rash. and no, i do not know what kind of infection i have and i'm unsure if the doctors here have the capability to perform a stool test. i will try the ayurvedic medicine for a few days starting tomorrow and see if that helps. otherwise i may have to leave here in search of a qualified doctor.

Nomadspike - there is a Tibetan hospital just down the hill towards Dharamsala where I am sure there will be qualified doctors. Also you could ask around for a good local doctor - e.g. bookshops - the people manning those are locals and will know. A very good one with a knowledgable man is on the small road that leads up to some very large hotels and ends near Pema Thang guesthouse - his shop is on your right not far from the crossroads near main market. Also on the small connecting street where there are fruit barrows, opposite is a Tibetan woman doctor whom I once consulted and was very good.
If your stomach, diarrhea are getting better, if it is any consolation, your rash will eventually go away by itself once you stop taking the tabs. I have had rashes as reactions to tabs. and have done nothing about them and they fast disappear. You probably know not to eat spicy, oily food until symptoms have stopped? Bananas, rice, curd, plain foods etc. Plenty of water with electrolyte powder as well. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like you have had pretty heavy dosing of tabs. and I reckon your bugs will be dead by now! Three days with those tabs. might be enough... |

Thanks Aishah for the advice. Hopefully the tabs have killed the infection after the heavy dosage and the rash will clear up on its own. I have started taking the ayurvedic meds this morning and will see by tomorrow how i'm feeling. If no improvement I will definitely have a chat with the gentleman in that bookshop (Bookworm I believe its called) - I was actually in there yesterday buying a book. Or go to Delek Hospital.
Thanks again. |

Great! You are getting yourself about and yes,Bookworm, is the one I meant! I have been in the course of living here around 5 times for extended stays in McLeod Ganj to escape the heat from where I live. It's a good area for long term stopping - now I only go if my friend who lives in Dharamsala will be there and this year, no. Good luck with everything and I hope your rashes disappear. if they itch get calamine lotion (easily available at the medical store).

i have had great success using the himalayan herbal formula "diarex", though when i was in delhi a few weeks ago, even that and electrolyte powder didn't help. so, after five days of nonstop diarrhea, i went to an ayurvedic doctor who gave me some herbs and the next day, along with a special massage, i was a new woman. and let me tell ya, my reserves were on E, so i was pretty elated.
actually, i wanted to post something about this clinic which is in paharganj, because they sorta saved me. i was a few days from taking my 30 hour journey home and had i not gotten that treatment, i don't think i could have made it. so, if you can get to a tibetan or ayurvedic clinic, i'd highly recommend that. get well soon - there's nothing worse than diarrhea when you're traveling.

Thanks for that. Can you give any more info on that clinic you mentioned in Paharganj? Name and location if you remember it?
Cheers! |

i have a brochure, but i cannot seem to locate it at the moment, though it seems like the clinic was named body and soul or something like that. it is near the euro hotel (i know cuz that's where i was staying) at it was like a half a minute walk from there. if i find the contact info, i'll let you know. the doctor was very knowledgeble and the massages (i had two that were given my two practitioners simultaneously) were fantastically regenerating.

Nomadspike - I've found that Sandalwood powder is wonderful on skin rash from heat. Might pay to do a spot test first, but I've never had a problem with any skin problem I've used it for and I have very fair skin. I'm told it's good for heatrash and also scorpion stings. Lets hope you never have to test out that particular claim tho... ![]()
