Travel/ Medical Insurance

Hi

Guys

I will be in Delhi in Mid July studying at the Central Hindi Institute until the end of April 2007. Will be staying in flat on Press Enclave Rd, Saket. After which l'm planning to travel for around 3 months. So its a total of around 13 months. I have just been checking some prices and they are way too expensive. My sister is also doing the same and she has type 1 diabetes (will be taking enough medication etc to cover trip, its well controlled and has been oked by doc). We are both in our 20s. Was wondering if any of you guys knew of any particular packages out there? Or would it be possible to take out medical insurance with a local clinic/hospital?

Any help would be much appreciated, cheers!!

Jaz

on my last trip to India, both my husband and I did not purchase any travel inssurance. we went to the doctor a couple of times for antibiotics or stomach problem and that was not too expensive like 10$.

I have also met a few people in India who were having dental work done in India, since it was too expensive at home.

I have also learnt that in India, the medical treatment and doctors are a lot cheaper than at home. They have all the medication we have here and even cheaper.

I would say go there without inssurance.

insurance

Its all very well going without insurance, yes medications and treatment are very cheap over there, BUT what if you have a really bad accident or something and need flying home!! That wont be cheap!!
We had insurance and yes we ended up paying the hospital ourselves as it was cheaper than the excess on the insurance, BUT this was for a minor accident, what if god forbid you are involved in something not so minor???

I wouldnt risk travelling without the insurance, generally yes we wont use it, BUT you just never know when it might just save your life!!

I agree with the above statement. I bought travel med. insurance for my two trips (they were both one month long trips.)

Life can change in a split second. When I was in Chennai last month, two of the yoga students were in a roll-over rickshaw accident, the woman was pretty banged up, could barely walk. I myself was in a rickshaw that was hit by a motor scooter (no injuries to anyone altho the woman on the scooter fell off.)

People buy car insurance and house insurance in case something might happen -- why take a chance with your health or body? But it's your choice. I used http://www.worldnomads.com

There's no reason to travel without insurance at these prices.

insurance

make sure you sort it out before you go , we live in turkey and tried to extend our med ins to cover us in india , no joy .
we thought what the hell we will sort it out over there .
when we tried we where told by more than one broker you need to hold a residence permit to get med insurance there .
we should have just done it on the net before hand .
luckily we had no probs at all.
but you say your sis is diabetic , then unless you are very familiar with her diabetis then please GET insurance .
my wife is a diabetic and i do know what i am talking about , can you inject her in case of emergency , do know how to use hypostop , can you use her test equipment , and what her intake should be ? .
unless you can do all this n more please take the insurance , in the worst case senario you could end up killing her , just to save a few bob .
it just aint worth it

I second the world nomads advice yogagal offered. Both my girlfriend and I use them, they are cheap and very good - half the price of other companies i researched

insurance

ALso check that the policy covers you for any activities you might enter into. While we were there a young man had an accident whilst doing water sports, a bad one and it cost £30,000 for treatment and to fly him home, his insurance did not cover him because he was participating in water sports and the policy did not cover for what was considered dangerous sports!!

Question Help!!

I know i've been hiding.. just been such a hectic schedule.. travel travel travel! time goes faster than i can think..!

I need some assistance pls.

I did check out the policy websites from the previous posts. I'm in a dilemna.
When I came to india little over 2 years ago, i had a wonderful health insurance (included travel) from work. since i stopped working last year, my insuranced ceased as well. yes, i know.. being here without insurance is quite risky, but i've been quite lucky thus far.

well, i'm on my way out of India next month (don't wanna leave..but that's a different story).. will be going to Europe before heading back home.
am an american citizen..have an indian resident permit (one of those letters stating that i can legally stay here after the initial 180 days).

from the above links (from previous posts)..it looks like i need to apply for insurance BEFORE leaving the states.

I need to get some travel insurance before travelling next month. Do you know of any company, which would cover me given these conditions?

(on a separate topic - offline - to my American resident friends - know of any good, cheap health insurance just to cover me for the 1st few months until i find a job?? Pls PM me)

Eagerly awaiting your responses!!!
