travel insurance, should I get it ......

I'm just looking up the costs of travel insurance and they vary hugely, I'm trying to get the most basic package and then I'm kind of wondering is there any point in getting it if it's that basic, would I be better just keeping the money for the insurance and using it if I ever go to hospital ? I travelled a copule of years ago and the first trip I did I got insurance and never used it, the second trip I did was just after the Bali bombing and they hiked the insurance costs up so I didn't get it and again was fine. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Yeh, i hear what you're saying, but then for the sake of $100-$150 i think its worth it. I fell off a motor bike in Thailand last year, was sure id cracked a rib, procrastinated for a week in pain. When i finally went to hospital, beacause of the insurance i was only out of pocket $40. That covered e-rays and drugs, inc consultation. I would have been up for 5 times the amount if i had no insurance.

check out '1cover' travel insurance- you can book online, not sure of the yearly cost though.

Diddles - don't even think about not getting travel insurance. If you're panicking about the money, then curtail your trip by a few days ...... but you'll be panicking about money even more if you need to start forking out for medical bills/lost luggage etc etc - not to mention if you are so ill that you have to be repatriated.

Some risks are worth taking - others definitely not! If you know you're insured, then you can take (some) other risks with impunity!!

Diddles, I would back what Judi just said and strongly advise you to take out insurance.

We have year-round travel insurance from our bank. We pay a little extra per year for an "enhanced" account which entitles us to a variety of benefits (which we frankly never take advantage of), but it more than pays for itself with the free insurance cover.

This is with the Royal Bank of Scotland, which you may not find in Ireland, but check around a few to see if they have similar deals. Be sure to check the details however.

My husband has been looking up travel insurance for us and just found a pretty good package, €200 each for the year with www.ecover.ie, just going to read the fine print now before booking it but reckon we'll go with that, thanks again for the advice
