Tobacco kills 50 Indians every hour

Every hour cancer kills 50 people in the country while 100 other people are diagnosed with it within the same time, shows the National Cancer Registry Programme data collected by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This makes cancers the fourth biggest killer disease cause of death in India.

wow - this is an astounding, disturbing number of people! 50 an hour is 1200 a day, 8400 a week, 36,000 a month... so many of my indian friends smoke tobacco, some of them heavily.

I don't suppose these 50 will be the ones ahead of me in the waiting list for my train reservation?

Buck - Free and Healing for Eleven Months, Twenty Four Days, 14 Hours and 31 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 31 Days and 3 Hours, by avoiding the use of 8965 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me £2,001.68.

How and where did you get such accurate statistics from?

I really need to stop.

I use (well used really) Quit counter which you download. Then it's a matter of typing in how much you smoke/cost etc and it does it for you. You get lovely messages every anniversary - from 1 hour at the beginning and so on. Next Wednesday I get my one year fireworks and told what a good boy I am! You can also program in messages to spur you on - mine were filthy but they did the job. There is also a copy stats to clipboard button thus the easy cut and paste stats.
If you're serious about stopping there are plenty quit forums - predominantly US - but if you're used to forums they can be a big help. Whatever you choose I wish you good luck. It's not easy but it is soooooo worth it!

No but they will definitely be ahead of you in line to meet Yama the God of Death.

I forgot to add this to my previous reply. I treated myself to this after three months knowing that I had to stay smoke free for a year to pay for it! The neighbours keep buying me cigarettes dunno why!
As I said it it soooo worth it!

Buck
NO! It's not back to front - I'm left handed.

Good one, Thanks Buck. Didn't know what that meant so went and googled it up. So which Yama do you think applies?

From the link Buck gave me indirectly (whyquit.com, thanks Buck )

Worldwide, over four million will die this year from cigarette smoking, while here in the U.S. smoking will claim over 440,000

Wait a minute:

Simple maths says 440000 means 440000/365/24= 50 an hour in the USA

Thats the same number for India with a much larger population, and the article is talking about all cancer? Surely smoking related deaths would be fewer than all cancer related deaths.! (see LB's first post)

Have I got it wrong? Or are the Indian figures underreported (or, indeed, the US figs overreported?)

Whatever, it is a very dangerous habit.

I agree captain...definitely a very bad habit..

But that is the reason I raised the question...about the global figures..

I cannot believe that India and US figures are exactly similar..

Would it be too much to ask if one of those 50/hour in the US is ahead of me in the waitlist for my reservation?

Buck

Prashant - I haven't got a clue! I googled your reply and found that one!
I have it on good authority though that if you don't drink, don't smoke and abstain from sex you don't actually live longer - it just feels like it!

Now I am stumped. I said something and you googled it and came up with something else, which looks similar. So in turn I google it up and learn something new. Ok, works for me. Here I was thinking, shame on me, you a Scot knows Upanishads better than me an Indian.
