The kind that carry dengue fever are active during the day! Can't remember what variety they are, but they're different from the malaria ones.

I was told by a local to wet a cloth, rinse it out and put it on my head, and do this often, it was advice for a long train journey in hot weather.

I tried this with my 7-month old baby last November in Goa, she had a soft cotton hat that snugly fitted round her head, a couple of times a day we'd rinse it, squeeze out most of the water and put the hat on her, it worked very well.

yep...a good idea! It would act like a coolant. But I think that wud work wonders in hot n DRY climate. Not sure how it would be in a humid climate. In humid climate with sweat all on if one gets into a A/C or in shade with a fan on....it makes one feel really really cool!

as for garments....a sports jogging shirt works well for me...keeps cool in both dry and humid weather. Wud not be a choice for going to office, tho.

A sports-type thermos kind of bottle to keep your stuff cold (or warm) is an asset though. The nice thing is it gets lighter during the day If it's too heavy, drink it!

I was thinking today of certain desert peoples who tend to dress up against the heat, in keeping with the vest idea; I assume it also doubles as a handy defense against the night cold. Probably more suitable in a dry climate; don't think I've ever seen it like that even in Rajasthan though. And I don't suspect a foreigner will easily adapt to this no.

Are there no Indian peoples who dress this way?

Hey, thanks guys.

This is Hot Weather Tip Heaven!

I'm gonna have to write all these down and then try every tip in my (literal) book.

Sirensongs as a fellow chick understands the clashing with SK fears..... But it's true, a baseball cap doesn't cover the ears and neck. Plus being of part-Irish extraction I am somewhat freckly with a lil' mole in the neck area that I don't fancy seeing any changes in.

Oh dear, I sound like a hypochondriac now.

steven - yeah wet cloth can be good.

any water over your body can help lower your temp. but as noted does not work well in humidity.
-----------
dont worry about covering face/neck - i mean what other sort of hat are you gonna wear that looks good and stays on your head (ah yes tennis, we have considered every angle).

Yes, in Auroville I adopted a combo of dupatta wrapped over head and round mouth and neck, topped off with baseball hat and shades for those long distance rides! I looked like a hip-hop Lawrence of Arabia.

Oh ONE more thing (!), ORS or Oral Rehydration Salts (very cheap at any pharmacy) are a real godsend. When you feel crappy and don't know why, you're probably dehydrated...this will pick you right up. In a pinch you can mix sugar and salt into drinking water.
