Scam?
I too allways ran from this guys, thinking its another scam (allthough one of them gave me a massage once). But I dont think so anymore... I think that maybe they know Exactly what they are doing... And I wouldnt mind getting my ear cleaned sometime...
My mom got her Ears cleaned with a swedish doctor here, maybe thats a safer way.... Anything that happens on the street feels less safe. Is there no ear cleaning elswere in India than on the street? Some first hand expiriences please...

Ear Ear
Thanks Bigzero, I might give it a go when the time is right, that is if an Ear Cleaner comes up to me and I can't hear what he says, guess it is time.

Ain't nobody gonna poke a stick in my ear'ole
Your ears are self-cleaning. If they get a bit waxed up, put a drop of warm oil in before you go to bed. This will soften it. ![]()

Most of the time ears are self cleaning, but for some that suffer from allergies, sinus or excess wax etc., then treatment is a consideration especially when one is about to fly as excess ear wax and flying are so very painful.

I first went to India in 1968 and had my ears cleaned by a guy with a small basket on his front containing a bottle of iodine and several long but delicate spoons. At that time one could sit in the shade under the Gateway to India in Bombay and this guy was waiting for business. I could feel the spoon going down somewhere into my kneck and he would pull out long slabs of wax and mount them in line along his thumb and hold his hand up high so everyone could see how much wax he was pulling out (embarrassing). Anyway he finished up with a line about the size of a cigarette. Boy, was my hearing crisp after that - so much so that I had to stuff a wad of toilet paper into each ear to keep the noise of India out.
On my last trip to Bombay 4 years ago I went in search of the ear cleaners but couldnt find them - although I did find a couple that wanted to stuff wads of cotton wool into each ear and give them a wipe, but I reckon I can clean my ears better than that my self using a biro cap. I was thinking that perhaps the original earcleaners killed so many people that they were wiped out by revenge relatives _ I know my family doctor threw his hands up in horror when I told him about it. I would still risk it though if I could find one on my next trip - perhaps take my own bottle of iodine though. Happy India-ing Mike Wilding |

Were they the genuine spoon earcleaners or the wad of cotton wool type? _ I went south as well but didnt see any of the spoon guys at all.

I was fairly certain that whatever they were showing me wasn't from my ear and I wasn't really in the mood to have then stick something in my ear so I moved on. |

No ear cleaner encounter in India for a month and a half. Two in China in a month.
The second Chinese effort demonstrated a fairly powerful flashlight, presumably to prove her visual acuity and op control. I wasn't too impressed, and told her off. |
