Yogagal, I am in Madras now, so can update you a bit on the water thing. Where I live (quite close to the sea) the ground water has turned completely salty- brushing teeth, rinsing etc is out of the question. The building buys Metro water and we use that for bathing. Then we also buy treated water in cans and use that for drinking.

Just check that the place you are going to stay at either has good ground water or buys "good" water if their ground water is unpotable. Our building does not buy enough "good" water because of some annoying residents who don't pay water taxes so we are sometimes forced to wash clothes in salty water...not a good situation.

Oops, just remembered you are going to stay at a hotel...so the building advice isn't necessary! Good luck and I hope your stay is enjoyable.

Hello Auntiji,

Glad to hear that you are home again, and sorry about the water situation . I understand from a news report a while back that almost none of Chennai has drinkable ground water now. Mine is not salty, but definately not drinkable either. I wash the toothbrush under the tap, but do not rinse my mouth with tap water.

most urban buildings have two water sources: tank water and direct municiple water.

tank water lets the yuck settle, and you get water with less particles. however, the tank needs to be cleaned and bleached yearly, and properly closed.

municiple water, which is what fills the tank but can also be accessed directly, tends to have more little stuff in it, but no dead monkeys.

either way, the water is guaranteed to be dirty and not fit for drinking. and yet you can drink it anyway, and likely have no short-term effects.

i drank caulvery river water for two weeks without knowing it once, totally unpurified or filtered, and had no indications from my body that it wasn't perfectly fine.

the build up of chemicals, toxins, and worms in my

In most parts of inida,
does the shower/tap water have a taint, or even color to it?
Are there usually noticeable particles of dirt/stuff floating around in a glass cup of water?

Brushing tips

Remember that you don't necessarily need to rinse your mouth after washing your teeth. It's good to leave the fluorescent toothpaste in your mouth and let it affect during the night.

And it might be handy to boil your toothbrush from time to time. Or change it more often.

Cauvery River

The mention of the Cauvery - I have recently spent 10 days visiting temples and ghats (near Mysore) on the Cauvery. It's a most impressive, beautiful river, fast flowing and looks clean enough. People were enjoying themselves boating in interesting round hide-covered 'boats'. I loved it. The nice thing was that I was the only non-Indian around the area.

Sorry, off the subject of clean water.

Speaking of boating and stuff reminded me of a post claiming they sometimes had to bathe in saltwater..

This is not so common I hope..
I mean the ocean is a good way to get clean,
but man,
I HATE crawling into a bed, all salty.. Its like the worst feeling..!
(the only exceptions were medical emergencies ocean-related)

Does it really matters....to keep the mouth shut consciously while taking bath !!! brushing or a bath really doesn't matter...till the time one is not gulping it down. And, under extreme circumstances, if one, at all gets thirsty during a bath or brushing...keeping a bottle of drinking water, near-by, might turn out to be handy !!!

..... On a slightly different note, I have occasionally been known to wear my rubber flip flops in the shower....
