this thread is getting me all hyped up. Amazing how mis-informed we are all about the way how our body works and defends itself. Just waiting to hear from some one calling for "individual breathing masks".
Maybe we should not worry about the full wet-suit, but just enjoying our showers with a scuba mask and snorkel in situ. Coat the mouth-piece with some toothpaste and accomplish all the tasks in one hit.

OP:
In Chennai you'll have to take showers very frequently.

So, avoiding contact with water might not be very optimum.
Try some Yoga that builds immunity of your own instead.

YES on the bucket shower. Taking a bucket shower is an art in itself, and is the traditional Indian way anyways Naaa??? Also with the bucket shower method one is assured piping hot water for the whole washing experience. The bucket shower is actually more refreshing than the over head shower too.

One of the reasons we have bucket baths is that it limits how much water you will be using. Or that you can see if the water is dusty or unclean. It could also be that we dont like the sounds of falling water. I'm just speculating.

One interesting aspect of bacteria in the mouth is in regards to some heart conditions as I understand that prior to some heart operations the teeth have to be checked and any decay etc sorted as this can have an effect on the recovery or ill effects after an operation. So thinking along these lines keeping ones mouth closed while showering if one is in any surgical situation may be quite prudent. I am sure the medico's here will clarify this better but something to contemplate.

Yogagal-- good thing you're going to India soon! Oh, and be sure to not use all the great Indian soaps when you don't bathe for a month! Bring some home to remind you of your trip whenever do you finally bathe!

Yes YoGoGal you can use Cinthol, an amazing deodorant soap that has the deodorising power of fresh air...
As for the teeth brushing I have only ever used tap water with no problems..

My question is: who takes showers with their mouths OPEN???<<

I do and many Indians do. We love singing loudly whilst having a shower.
Try it sometime. Its very refreshing.

Hey! A little bit of serious has to be admitted in a daft thread, or we may find ourselves frowning on daft comments in serious threads.

oh, and YG... the sewage doesn't have to be raw, at least at first: you can work up to raw!

since previous comments of mine (on this thread and others) are being used as the butt of a joke, my comment is not off topic.
