Have you also been told not to brush your teeth with tap water?
As long as you don't swallow, you should be ok.. |

If you are unsure of the place you are staying at, I strongly suggest using bottled water for brushing your teeth. The good hotels and most people's homes have good water or boiled water and so will be safe. Otherwise I say bottled water and yes for heavens sake do not swallow when taking a shower. Just take a peak into the water tanks that hold water and you will find an amazing number of interesting creatures. None on the endangered list by the way.

I did that, peak into the tank with my brother in law. Sure 'nough there was a dead monkey in there. Don't know why they always boil their water..

I think I'll remind myself NOT to look into the tank, I'd just rather not know. Ignorance is bliss so they say |

Back to the original question -- I do take showers w/ my mouth open stateside. In India, I keep my mouth shut.

Peek, I will learn to proof right after I learn to touch type. My relation says that a monkey is unusual, birds are common..

I helped an ex girlfriends dad replace a water tank once at their country Australian house, it was about 15 years old. There was plenty of dead stuff in the bottom of that, including a couple of possums (looked like they had been there for years), along with 20cm of excto plasm (at least thats what it felt like when it spilt all over me) (eeewwwww).
We used to drink from those tanks all the time and it never affected us, but then the water was never taken from the bottom.

I brush my teeth in the shower at home... in India (and some other countries) I keep my mouth shut in the shower and use bottled water for brushing.
Always ask at the hotel of they have a water purifier available(many do). Much better to refill your bottle than to contribute more plastic waste.

I was overly paranoid about water when I visited Nepal for the first time that everytime I showered I had this small hand towel covering my entire face (!!). Yes, indeed I had a difficult time showering. lols that was when I was 15. But now, I pretty much just wash my face normally and rinse my mouth with the water. And I haven't gotten sick on any of my trips thus far.
