It is certainly better to let nature take its course for at least a day or two, bearing in mind the dangers of dehydration.

The way to stop diarrhoea is to have the cause diagnosed and treated. A substance like loperamide stops the symptoms, but doesn't cure the underlying problem. Stopping your bowels from working will of course interfere with the job they're supposed to do. But loperamide (and perhaps others) are great if you run into a problem and for example have to travel for hours on a bus.

Doctors and drugs are dirt cheap in India, compared even to Sweden, where it's all next to free. See a doctor. If you don't, at least see to that you replace the water and salt you lose.

Can't resist to add my recent experience here.......... i hope it is helpful and relevant.

Like many others I have been suffering recurrent bouts of nasty stomach over quite a long time, and last week got really really sick. so sick i couldn't go to work - and actually couln't get to the doc either as I was too dependent on my bathroom!!Anyway, long story short, I took a sample to the clinic, and the doc saw me, and just wrote out a prescription for Norflax and a heap of stuff enough to stock a fair sized pharmacy WITHOUT ANY TESTING. I was unhappy that there had been no test as I was pretty sure that that what she had prescribed did not treat the symptoms I had described to her (I have lived in this part of the world for seven years, and kind of know how each variant of unvited visitor makes me feel). so I insisted on putting in a test anyway, which she was not happy about. Result - the meds she prescribed were TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for the bugs in the test result. so my response to the Nofrlox debate, apart from following a full course, is to make sure that you know what the cause is (as far as possible) as the treatment could be entirely unsuitable. I luckily didnt start the Norflox as I wanted to see what the real problem was first. When the test result came back I went to a different doc who immediately prescribed the appropriate course of treatment.

given that you are describing something which keeps on coming back, Darwish, it could be that the cause is not something which Norflox treats........... One of my little uninvited house guests gives symptoms which come and go and give you the impression that you are better only to strike again a few days later.

Take care and get well soon

good advice. even doctors here in the US hand out antibiotics like they're candy without knowing what's what.

My plan

I now finished the first day of the Norflox TZ. I already feel better. It seems that the ayurvedic cure which is for 40 days amplifies the working of the Norflox by a factor 100.
I'll finish a cure of 2 tablets Norflox per day for 4 more days. I suppose that I'll be cured then. But if then it comes back again. I know that Cool Blue is right and i go for a test and get the right prescribed medicines.

I just don't know if it is one bug which is bugging me now for almost a month or that it are several different bugs.

I'll see what the reality is.

I guess after 1 month all the useful bacterias in your bowels are not working properly anymore, maybe that's why you have problems again and again. After you've finished the Norflox treatment you can try prebiotics, sometimes it works wonders (my own experience).

100 Crore docs? I thought India was a land of 100 Crore gods!

I guess every Indian is good at self medicating and has a strong medical opinion.

Darwish, you spoke in very general terms rather than specific symptoms. Well not your fault I guess as most patients do it.

In India you can get diarrhoea and sickness from various reasons, depending upon how lucky or unlucky you are. If the symptoms are mild and self limited a wait and watch approach is reasonable.

On the other hand if it is severe with fever and blood you should see a doctor.

If it is chronic and refuses to go away, do see a good doctor.

Hi,

Definately agree with the getting properly tested. Don't forget to wash your hands really well most indian toilets don't have soap so carry some around with you, as many of the bugs come from hand to mouth contact.

One of the best prebiotics which adds the good flora back into the gut is good old curd, Dahi or Yogurt what ever you want to call it. After anti biotics always eat loads of curd!

Hope you start to feel better soon.

letting diarrhea run its course could have dire consequences. besides the dehydration, the weakness associated with it is quite troublesome. best to find out what is causing it. i had it for five days (delhi belly), and while i was taking an ayurvedic formula (Diarex) and drinking the electrolyte formulas, i was not improving, but growing weaker by the day, and only a few days from making the long journey back home. so i went to an ayurvedic dr. who brilliantly knew just what to do and by the next morning i was a whole new person. i kicked myself for not going a whole lot sooner since i lost out on my final days in india.

After reading the posts in this thread, I was debating myself as to whether it is ok for Registered Medical Practitioners in India to prescribe medicines based on the symptoms indicated by the patient on internet without patients being checked in person?

No it isn't

However it's sometimes a fine line between well-meant advice and outright diagnosis. But let it stand as a warning yes.

Meanwhile, querying members are advised to exercise common sense in what answers they get.

Another mod adds, in backup...

We certainly discourage internet prescription. A the same time we very much appreciate qualified and informed professional knowledge and information.

These days you can easily find sites on the internet where you can buy, without any prescription or medical advice at all, many drugs that are certainly not available over the counter in many a country.

In the end, it is down to each person's responsibility for themselves.

I finished my 5 days cure of Norfloxin. already on day 2 of the cure the effects were gone. So the bug must be out of my body now.
if the symptoms come back in a few days again, i go for a checkup in a hospital. as then i must have something serious which needs accurate diagnose.

Guess I'm cured

I'm cured it seems. i'm so happy about these as the disease really killed my mood. I got annoyed about almost everything in India.

Now I have to be careful about what to eat and nothing will go wrong.

Thanks for all advices.
