Yes Nick. So my one question remains: should this be stimulated on a board like this? Speaking to people who you don't know and haven't seen? By people calling themselves doctors even? Or anyone else?

I guess with GoanCanuck's advice to not bother with the web and go see a doctor this thread could have been limited to two rather short posts.

<coss-post> I've been wondering about that probiotics stuff Cyber but know too little about it to get into it. I think you're right though. Vistet had an interesting critical remark about it here http://www.indiamike.com/india/showt...1#post26 8691, I'm a little disappointed he never added his views on the other thread.

As a lay person I wouldn't recommend medicines to people but if a doctor does, that's a different story. And advice from alopathic doctor holds at least as much weight as a natural medicines doctor.

It seems travel or prospective travel in India encourages a big leap in faith to natural medicine, you wouldn't believe the amount of people who let themselves get seriously sick because of this "faith"

Allowing and encourageing natural medicinal advice but refuting alopathic seems daft to me, none or both would seem fair!!

CH... there is information on that thread on general precautions, and treatment both alopathic and otherwise.

As to it's having been 'given' a thread --- well, as one the oldest IMers around, you know that threads are born not given. I made it sticky because it covers many often-asked questions and is full of good advice.

I wouldn't add the extra 'T' if I was you. Tea is a diuretic and you lose more water than you consume.

I'm not too happy about aspersions being cast on "people who call themselves doctors" on this site.
But for my definitive treatment advice regarding food or water borne diarrhea, here goes:
1. ORS - replacement of fluids and electrolytes : Electral is one brand.
2. Loperamide - Imodium to stop the dirrhea if severe.
3. Metoclopramide - Reglan or Perinorm for persistent vomiting.
4. Ofloxacin - Ornidazole combination, as in Zorno , to cure the infection, bacterial or protozoal.
Reassurance
Rest
Hospitalization and IV fluids if the patient does not respond.

Rich Anpoor: technically Tea (Carmellia sinensis) is actually an astringent, and very useful for the treatent of diarrhoea. It is the Caffiene that is the diuretic, hence small frequent sips of black, oolong or green tea are an excellent antidote for the runs. The tea polyphenols are also antiviral and antibacterial, as well as a plethora of properties that aid in the prevention of chronic western diseases.

Everyone be nice to Sanjay he is a very sensitive allopath

Thanks for putting me right Doc. I will bear that in mind in the future. Shoulda known I didn't have it quite right! I seem to remember someone telling me the difference between a poison and a medicine is a matter of dosage, so that fits right in.

Am I right in saying you shouldn't rely on tea for liquids tho?

Mach, here you go again. You take everything a tad too seriously sometimes. One minute you are suggesting that people go elsewhere to get professional advice and then you go ahead and give your expert advice anyway. Give us a break.

Nick, do the pharmacies in Chennai sell antibiotics without a prescription only if the customer is known to the store owner or do they sell to every stranger who walks in?

Despite following all the advice so generously provided on IM recently, I'm sorry to tell you that Annie got sick yesterday. She was up much of the night with diarrhea and vomiting. (She actually went into the bathroom carrying a copy of War and Peace, which can't be a good sign.) This morning she is lying in bed while I'm up fretting. She seems a little hot to the touch, although she says she feels fine. She actually looks quite well.

I went down to the local chemists armed with my list of drugs gleaned from several threads on IM. The chemist told me he only carried two of them (norfloxacin, as recommended by the mighty Drzog, and Pudina Hara. He wouldn't sell them to me. We are armed with immodium and rehydration tablets and lots of preventative medicines that evidently didn't help too much.

Any advice from anyone? Should I stop worrying and go shopping? Should I get Annie to a doctor? (I'm pretty sure the answer is t keep her warm and relaxed and hydrated as far as possible for the next day or so and get her to a doctor if she doesn't get better in a few days. Still, it's one thing thinking it and another believing it when your loved one is sick so far from home...)

All help gratefully received! I hope I can help someone one day on IM, rather than constantly asking for advice.

Jason

Hi
I haven't had time to read all the answers to this so apologies if someone has said similar.
I was sick for 2 weeks - no vomiting but a mixture of diorrhea then constipation, then diorrhea, all accompanied by very painful cramps. I didn't what to take antibiotics for various reasons & try not to take too much medicine so I just let it work through my system. It didn't seem to be going away though until after 2 weeks I started drinking 2 lassis a day - all cleared up within 2 days, no joke. I assume it's the stuff in the curd that rebalances your gut. If she doesn't want to take medicine therefore, get her to have curd & lassis, it may well help her too...

I think there is some difference in what they will sell to know customers, but I suspect they would be reticent about stuff like tranquilisers, sleeping pills, amphetamines, that kind of stuff.

I don't think they'd bother much about antibiotics. The bad news is that there seems to be little awareness of the dangers of unnecessary usage, over-prescribing and not taking a whole course.

Of course, with all these things --- it probably depends on who's looking!

BabyBlue... the lady concerned has seen a doctor and is on the mend. The thread has become a more general conversastion since that point!

Oh golly, there goes me again being a tad too serious.

What I'd like to know is if the people taking the responsibility to offer their treatments would take the responsibility if it screws up as well. I guess carefully reading what is being asked in some worried person's first post would be a good first step.
