About the fluids - lemonade would be ideal.
Water
Sugar (Glucose = energy)
Salt Sodium, Chloride
Lemon Potassium
All these will replenish the upset salt balance in the body
Lemon tea is a substitute

Have to confess a liking for the 'naughty' smile

What? You'd noticed?

Yes indeed. This was the reason why I posted that Jason should get hold of a doctor as quickly as possible.

One big feature of visiting India is that if one falls sick it is not difficult to get a doctor to visit you in your room. No chance of a doctor doing that in Canada.

In fact the OP made specific mention in his post #1 of not being able to acquire norfloxacin over the counter anyway. (I take it this is unsurprisingly an antibiotic? If so, heads-up to the chemist who wouldn't sell it, people shouldn't be popping antibiotics without supervision like it were aspirin.)

But... peace folks! Jason, happy to hear about the recovery. Happy further trails! Or soon anyway!

I'm sure you could, in Delhi too no doubt if you're persistent. I find it worrisome that many travellers seem to find cause to celebrate in this though. Again, antibiotics are not aspirin.

To quote the original post then,

Well, I celebrate it because I believe in being able to take responsibility for my own body. I even take a stash of penicillin to UK with me to avoid long waits to see doctors, dentists etc, and the high cost of prescriptions in UK for drugs that cost a few pennies.

But I also don't use it as an excuse not to get advice from a doctor and I don't self-prescribe unless I am sure from experience, eg a tooth abscess.

I think most people do tend to self-prescribe, especially in the initial stage of denial, when they refuse to believe they are so sick that they need to see a doctor.

And then you, as a professed doctor, find it wise to stimulate them in this over the internet without ever having seen them? How's your clinic been going these days?

Also give 2 tablets of Fasigyn DS (Tinidazole) as a single dose.

And Nick, the point with antibiotics is that a) you shouldn't take them for no reason and b) you'll quickly build up resistance so if you get the treatment wrong, or if you do need them at a later stage for something where they are applicable, they may no longer work.

We weren't talking tooth abscess here, but a woman too sick to walk. If you check out this norfloxacin you'll find its main use is for treatment of urinary tract infections btw, although it arguably seems to be used against other infections that none of us can be sure the woman in question had.

Must I add a reminder here that this woman was apparently helped by a visit to the doctor, not by anyone's advice here? I hope her healing process is going well.

Norfloxacin is used both for UTI and gastro-intestinal infections. There are stronger antibiotics available for such ailments, which we would prefer not to "prescribe" in a forum like this, without seeing the patient.

I can assure you I've been rendered too ill to walk by a tooth abscess! On a couple of occasions!

I'm stuck here between the European over-regulation and the Indian free-for-all.

And the Indian situation is not helped by the fact that when people see their doctor, they want medicines! So over-prescribing is rampant. Then they stop taking them because they don't like the taste or as soon as they feel better. It is quite likely that many people would never even but the complete course, even if their doc prescribed it: the pharmacies will be happy to sell in ones and twos.

Massive generalisations, of course. Things may even be different in Sanjay's city to mine: but if not, I suspect he will confirm that I'm not too far off the mark.

Norfloxcin is the drug of choice. Only thing is if it's a parasite Nrofloxcin won't help. Actually as sanjay is a doctor I see no reason not to offer help. Thousands of people self prescribe this drug anyway, when they have a stomach upset. Why, because pretty much all the the guidebooks recommend it.

There's another doctor here on IM who offers advice on preventing gastro intestinal infection the natural way, This is very suspect info IMHO but it was given a thread all of it's own........ so????
The doctor in question seemed remarkably uninformed about travel in India but because the word NATURAL is used everyome gets all misty eyed about info that probably doen't stop you from getting sick!!

Consistancy please!!!
