Could be baterial or a parasite or poisening, Which is the very reason you need to go to the Doctor. I know what to use for all three but I wouldn't want to advise on a travel forum. See a doctor. Indian doctors are great and will give you a lot of time and actually listen to you, they also see countless cases of Delhi Belly so will be able to say what it is exactly!!

All the home remedies above should be ignored, they may work for the individuals who posted them but that is no reason they'll work for you!!

Hi Cyberhippie,

Thanks very much for the message. I actually got a doctor out to Annie this evening: she was too sick to walk to the hospital. She has some medicine and I'll keep all of the kind wellwishers on this thread informed about her progress.

By the way, top site! Good work!

Best wishes,

Jason

This should be obvious but perhaps is not--and it applies in your situation or anyone else's. The procedure for dealing with illness in India is no different from what it is at home. If at home you would go to the doctor, then go to the doctor in India. If curds and salt are an effective remedy at home, by all means take them in India. If not, do what you would normally do--and this usually does not include casting about for remedies on the internet (however helpful and informed people may be). Bottom line? If you're sick at home or in India, you probably know what needs to be done. So do that.

There's something deeply disturbing about this to me; not with regards to Jason the OP, but with regards to all of us who come up with our home-grown advice when we haven't actually seen that person and it now turns out she apparently can't even make it to the hospital anymore. Think about it if you will.

Anyway, best wishes to you both & trust she gets well soon. Let us know in your own good time.

Delhi is the place

If you have to be sick in India, then Delhi is the place to do it!!
See this link
http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/medical_information2.html
for extensive information on reliable medical providers in Northern India. Certainly other embassies maintain their own information in a similar fashion.

People are so afraid to go to the doctor here but actually there is excellent care available. Just don't go to any stall with a curtain at any cross roads...do a little homework with your own embassy first. Better still, travel with such a list on your person, for peace of mind if nothing else.

IAMAT also maintains a list of "western trained" doctors around the world. For a modest donation of any amount, they will send you a booklet with all the contact information, and detailed information about malaria prevention around the world as well.

Just to let all of the kind people on this thread know, Annie seems to be responding very well to medication. She managed to get up and walk around a little today. She is back in bed now, but is clearly recovering.

We both really appreciate everyone's kindness in taking the trouble to offer their advice and best wishes. Now we are looking forward to Annie's complete recovery so that we can go on and enjoy the rest of India.

Heartfelt thanks from Annie, who told me to say that she thinks IM is the best site in the world.

There is the BRAT diet to help bind.
Bananas,
Rice,
Apples and
Toast
(this is often given to children as a treatment for NAUSEA, VOMITING AND/OR DIARRHEA
THE “BRAT DIET”)

I add an extra T (tea) for more fluids)

Don't forget that rehydration, even if the symptoms have stopped.

Glad to hear of the improvement.

Dr Sanjay Sharma, New Delhi

with regards Dr. s sharma,
i differ with the dosage of norfloxacin and tinidazole.......
norfloxacin should b atleast continued fr 5-7 days! undertreated cases usualy relapse or has a continous low grade stomach trouble!! and chance of resistance !!!
tinidazole 600 once/twice daily fr same duration, or
500 mg twice daily fr 5-7 days or
2gm single dose followed by 500mg twice daily fr 5 days.
2gm stat dose with no further continuation is only indicated in trichomoniasis and giardiasis, and these are least likely in the acute settings.
please don't take any ofence dr. sharma, just shared my view.

since the pt is having high temp, most probably the cause is bacterial and associated metabolic disturbances due to loose motion and vomiting!!

since they have already seen a doc, so i guess no further medical advice reqd.
only advice: avoid roadside foods , and more so avoid waters everywhere unless they have aquaguard or it is mineral bottled water.

get well soon

regards
