Somewhat sick in Delhi - advice

Hi everyone,

Well, this is the second time I've tried to start this thread - I hope it works this time!

Despite following all the advice so generously provided on IM recently, I'm sorry to tell you that Annie got sick yesterday. She was up much of the night with diarrhea and vomiting. (She actually went into the bathroom carrying a copy of War and Peace, which can't be a good sign.) This morning she is lying in bed while I'm up fretting. She seems a little hot to the touch, although she says she feels fine. She actually looks quite well.

I went down to the local chemists armed with my list of drugs gleaned from several threads on IM. The chemist told me he only carried two of them (norfloxacin, as recommended by the mighty Drzog, and Pudina Hara. He wouldn't sell them to me. We are armed with immodium and rehydration tablets and lots of preventative medicines that evidently didn't help too much.

Any advice from anyone? Should I stop worrying and go shopping? Should I get Annie to a doctor? (I'm pretty sure the answer is t keep her warm and relaxed and hydrated as far as possible for the next day or so and get her to a doctor if she doesn't get better in a few days. Still, it's one thing thinking it and another believing it when your loved one is sick so far from home...)

All help gratefully received! I hope I can help someone one day on IM, rather than constantly asking for advice.

Jason

Start with Oral Rehydration Solution. Get some sachets of Electral.
Mix the powder contained in one packet in one liter of water.
Let her drink this solution instead of plain water.
Norfloxacin- dose is 400 mg twice a day for 3 days.
Also give 2 tablets of Fasigyn DS (Tinidazole) as a single dose.
In case of fever or persistent vomiting, give a tablet of Metopar as needed.
Ask for further help if required.

Buy some Oral dehydration powder from a chemist. Mix that with bottled water & drink. A Delhi belly thing generally goes away in two day's time. See a doc if it persists or if she runs high temperature. Avoid antibiotics unless advised by a doctor.
Good luck.

If you're worried I'd say go see a doctor. There are decent to excellent hospitals in Delhi, not that you need one as such but you stand a good chance of finding the right person there. It's probably nothing but I wouldn't let it depend on some board like this. Your hotel should be able to direct you to the right place.

Taking rehydration salts (or just a mixture of sugar and salt for lack of that, 8:1 teaspoons in a liter of water) is of course wise, as is keeping an eye on dehydration and its symptoms. If the symptoms persist this alone can cause a simple condition to rapidly deteriorate. This is no call for panic but keep a firm eye on it.

Immodium is just for plugging you up in case you need to travel for instance, it is by no means a cure or even a treatment in that sense, and can actually have adverse effects as you're keeping in there what needs to get out. It doesn't solve the causes in any case.

Good luck & seek professional advice, for your peace of mind if nothing else. Better safe than sorry and all that jazz, one useless visit to the doc's won't make you a worse person for it.

Let us know how it goes.

don't get me wrong but this sort of thing bugs me. IM is no medical advisory board and shouldn't be taken as such. You can get as many views here on any of the common and not-so common medical questions as you might wish for. Please people (not the OP but all visitors), there are medical booklets you can take along, professional websites to visit, tropical health clinics or simple GP's to visit or call up before you go...

Send a message via Yahoo to phantom
If she's able to eat something then get her some Yoghurt-rice combo. And also look out of fresh papaya. Hope she'll be fine soon.
I always carry with me a bottle of Liv-52 tablets. These are ayurvedic medicines and no side-effects. So everytime you feel that your stomach is heavy you just pop in 2 pills with water and everythig is fit and fine the next morning

I strongly agree with Mach about this not being the place for medical advice --- but I'll chip in too anyway!

Curd rice is great (put some sugar instead of the salt/pickle combination). Banana is great. I lived on these two for several days once.

Try not to take anything for 24 hours --- unless you have to travel. Let nature take its course.

I agree with some of the household remedies above, but we're talking diarrhoea and vomiting with apparent fever here. If it passes, OK, could just be food poisoning or gastroenteritis or a violent tummy upset or something, but how should we know, esp. without a) being a professional and b) having seen the patient (rather crucial). If it doesn't, seek attention soon. I remember Dr. Funkenstein having some apt description of being alone and progressing from something like that into a state of bare consciousness pretty quickly, moreover not realizing what was going on with him, luckily his hotel staff took over.

Again, I don't mean to send OP into a state of panic, it's probably nothing, but if you hadn't been worried I don't assume you'd have attempted twice to write it up here. Curd & rice and ORS and fasting and stuff are nice for mild to heavy stomach upsets, which shouldn't send you puking all over the place nor make your temp. rise significantly however.

You need to take her to a doctor. Don't waste your time asking for medical advice on a travel forum.

Thanks very much to everyone for their excellent and kind advice. I do understand that IM isn't a medical forum and isn't supposed to be: really I was just worried and wanted advice on what to do, rather than what to take. Still, I recognise that I probably didn't express myself too clearly in the heat of the moment.

I'm going to try to get her to a doctor this afternoon. Absolutely right - a useless visit doesn't make anyone a worse person! The only thing is, she can be very stubborn about doctors...

Once again, many thanks to everyone who replied to my post and for their concern. I'll let you know how it goes.

Best wishes,

Jason

Not at all, best wishes & I hope (and assume) it works out well. The stuff about medical info here was meant more as a general precaution for (other) people to not rely solely on boards like these. There are old-fashioned methods such as speaking to your doctor before leaving or while you're there etc.

Again, best, if she struggles just drag her over there (hire some porters!) & let us know how it all worked out, but only when you're settled and at ease again!

Seeing a doctor in a country where medical care is so cheap would seem to be sensible..

For diarrhea
1 cup plain curd
1 teaspoon full of SAT ISABAGOL [ or any known brand isabagol ]
1 teaspoon full of brown sugar. Now its not that illegal brown sugar that i am talking about. In hindi we call it shakkar & since its brown in colour it known as brown sugar.
To lay your hands on that sugar u need to go to old provision stores coz they MAY keep it.

Eat it 2/3 times a day This really worked me instantly.

For vomiting
As IMers above mentioned curd rice, khichdi & other very light food can be given.Avoid spicy & oily food.

My advice would be to apply the options above & wait for a day. If next day the situation doesnt improve visit a doc ASAP.

Second gautam on the SAT Isabgol. Don't use the fancier brands, they arent as good.

Plain sugar will do instead of brown.

Guaranteed except in extreme cases. We use it all the time; no drugs and it really works.
