A couple of years back my friends were told to go behind the 'Pan Shop' to a 'Smoking Zone' at a very small town's bus station. It was like 200/500 Rs fine for Public Smoking. But then I saw that restriction died down as I do and see ppl smoking at all the public places besides the obvious ones like Train Stations and inside the airports. In last December I had to look around to see if there are any smokers around at a city center in Mumbai...there were some Police near me for some reason and I was not sure if that ban had surfaced again in the 6 months I was not there. Much Glad...it has not!

all touristic places in your list, so should not be a problem...even for a lady smoker And hey be glad some A/C 'Restaurant n Bar' do allow smoking. Sadly at some places Cigars are not allowed. At a hotel in Mumbai (and I think many others they wud not) I was not allowed to smoke my fav brand of cigarette also.

So it will be just fine smoking around. Just see that at a new public place DO look out for smokers before she lits hers. If you see some its ok, if none better ask someone before going for it. As yet there ain't always boards to say "No Smoking" at public places in India.

Thanks a lot So in short, use common sense while picking places where you can smoke.

She will likely be regarded as even more morally deficient that the average foreign woman if she smokes in the street here.

Definately not to be done in any restaurant here.

And if she does it anywhere near me...

If you are in a restaurant, ask the waiter to get you a pack of cigarettes - he'll tell you if there is a ban in force. Many restaurants allow smoking and some have no smoking zones.

I'll cough and splutter and walk briskly away complaining about ignorance and lack of care for others.

...before reminding myself that I used to do it too!

You sometimes see men smoking here in the street. Women, never.

People may smoke in the restaurants Sanjay frequents. His corner of India is a long, long way away from mine. Here they absolutely and categorically do not.

Maybe in tourist hotels. I don't know about that.

Really? When I was traveling through India, I saw quite a few women smoking. But maybe that's because I was in all the "touristy" places and the women were NRI's.

I totally agree Nick!

I've been worrying about how to avoid smoke when in India and certainly hope that I can come across restaurants where I can enjoy my food without smokers around.

Is smoking that frequent in restaurants of Northern India Sanjay?

Grrr.

Many restaurants have no smoking zones to keep up with political correctness and changing times. Delhi Govt announced a ban on smoking in public places but it is not strictly enforced.
Generally pubs and bars allow smoking. Other eating joints go for a "please all" policy, to attract non-smokers and retain their smoking clientele.
