Simple Medical Clinic
Hi all,
I am wondering if there is anyone from IM who has had experience with setting up a rural medical clinic in India. If so I would love to hear from you. I have a friend who has built and is operating a Children's Home in a small village. She wants to set up a simple medical clinic that would service the children and adults at the Home and the people of the village. I have told my friend that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel- that there are people who have already gone through this process and have much wisdom to share. Thanks for any help you might have for me!

I had clients who wanted to set up a fishermen's clinic as part of an Ayurveda resort. It was just one simple building with an examination room for the doctor, a toilet and another small room used as a medical shop. And a kind of verandah as a waiting area for the patients. The whole project never came up, so no more practical experience to share...
I know a doctor who provides basic health service in some villages around Kodaikanal, but he is Indian, so the case would be different. One of the most important things is that she has to find a doctor who is willing to live in this village or at least who is willing to visit it regularly... according to my experience not a lot of doctors are... |

Thanks frederica. We also have plans for a simple layout- examination room, toilet, supply room/very simple lab, waiting area. The intention is to utilize Indian physicians who would volunteer their time. The hope is that they will actually come from the nearby medical school. There is a comuunity service requirement that could be fulfilled easily in this setting. Already a relationship has been developed as they have agreed to provide free annual check-ups for the children. My friend is a very gracious, persuasive Indian woman.
We are still hoping that there is someone who has gone through this process that could advise. ![]() |

Hi Indiadreamer,
I hope you will be successful with your project! The doctor I was talking about is Dr. Mascarenhas, an eye specialist. His organization is called "Pasam Trust" and is based in Kodaikanal. Maybe you can google for more infos, otherwise I can look for the contact details and pm them. where in India are you planning your rural medical clinic? |
