Shot series
Combined Hep A+B, I may not be in the same place for the first and second shot, can I get them individualy in different places or can I maybe buy the serum and inject myself.
As for the third shot, I'll already be in India, can I get the shot there and does it matter |

MeCasa, unless you plan on having unprotected sex -- and in your case I'm not too sure
(only kidding, guy ) -- or if you anticipate having a blood transfusion, you can forego the Hep B. I only got Hep A for my first trip and you have to wait 6 months to get the booster (which was in time for my second trip anyway.) |

Hep B comes in handy if you get into a motorcycle accident and need a transfusion. With more HIV than any other country I doubt the first likelihood. Still, some of those truck drivers..

Get them ALL, including Tetanus and Typhoid and MMR and Flu. Sure, there are cases of complications...not nearly as many as there are cases of all of the above. Seriously.

OK, I have an idea to save some money, shots are VERY expensive in Texas, suppose I get the first set of Combo Hep A/B shot and my other shots in another affordable locale about three weeks before I leave. (leaving from NY) I can then have the second Hep A/B in India while at the hospital. This would save me many hundreds of dollars, what do ya'll think?
Completed shots are not a requirement to travel to India, are they? Thanks |

No shots are "required" to go to India, shots are only "recommended". So if you are thinking someone is going to ask you for an immunication certificate, that's not going to happen. I've known a number of people who travel to India without having any shots whatsoever, but that's their choice.

Yoga, what do you think about getting the second Hep A/B in India and the third when I get back, we're talking $300 -$400 difference in costs if I only get the first Hep combo in the US (due to Texas costs versus Northern states/subsidized costs) and I can use that money elsewhere.
And just for the info of all IMers, the third Hep A/B combo is often given upon return to the states, there is NO problem with this as the first two shots will protect you. The reason why you NEED to get the third shot is that this gives you lifetime protection, you never need to have the shots again, but the third is theoretically required for the 'lifetime protection' |

Nick, yes, true, forgot about yellow fever -- just never knew anyone who got that one when they went to India (altho I'm getting it if I go to Tanzania, along with Hep B....)
MeCasa, all I can tell you is what my doctor told me, which is what I did (I did not get the Hep B tho) -- I got the Hep A, went to India, and my dr. said you can get the Hep A booster 6-12months after the first Hep A shot. In fact, he would not give me the booster before the 6th month. I got the booster 6 months to the day of getting the first one since I was going back a second time, about 6 weeks after I had the booster. So....obviously I'm no doctor, but it would seem to me that it would be OK to get the 2nd shot (the booster) after 6 months when you are in India. are you getting the others, typhoid, tetnus, polio? I got all those, altho I took the typhoid oral vaccine. |

HepA/B combo is a three part deal, 2nd set is 30 days after the first and the third is 4-6 months later
I'm leaving Sept 13th, so I'll get the 1st HepA/B in NY mid August $60 and the second set in India (I hope), should be cheap in India and the third when I get back Since they have a one-time exam fee $45 I'll also get Typhoid $38 Polio Booster $36 and a small supply of Malaria in NY, I already had a tetanus I need mennigitis because I have no spleen but I'm told there is a national shortage So I'm not sure what to do about it |

AFIK (and that's just a little bit) , you don't need to be heb -b free to get a transfusion of blood only to give one. (plus there are probably plenty of hep b dormant donors in India.also is there a problem with landing in India, walking in to a doctor(that looks relatively clean) and getting all your shots? because then it might cost a grand total of twenty bucks or something.
