Riding a motorbike or scooter in Goa!!

I've just been told that a couple of friends were involved in a Motorbike accident in Goa, one of whom was killed.
The other is also in a bad way!!

So in the light of this I thought I'd just remind people to drive carefully in Goa, the sunshine and dry weather can leave you feeling a bit invincible.
One stray dog/cow is all it takes to ruin a holiday or worse. Or as in this case a truck!

Take it easy, you're on holiday there's no rush. Be aware, look for things in your path. DON"T drive at night and if there's a helmet available use it!!

My thoughts go out to the familes and the small community where they both come from!!

A timely warning Cyberhippie. As a person with years of experience riding mototrcycles, I would strongly recommend against riding a motorcycle/scooter -- especially if you have never ridden before. The road conditions in India are generally bad, Goa is worse. The rental vehicles are typically in bad shape -- with bald tires and barely functioning breaks, horn and lights.

And as careful as you may want to be, you cannot prevent another vehicle from running into you.

Wouldn't it be better to say --- if there is no helmet available then don't drive?

Just because locals subject themselves to this risk every day doesn't mean visitors should too.

People say that the speeds are lower in India: I would have thought that head meeting ground at even ten miles an hour might be enough to kill.

CH... sorry to hear that you lost a friend.

Roads conditions in the North are very crowded and potentially dangerous, but the South see's very little traffic, and if your driving the back roads almost none. I was riding from Patnem to Agonda one time and an Autorickshaw came straight for me and didn't move and ran me off the road. I wanted to turn around and catch him and do bodily harm to him. Unfortunitely I didn't.
Another time coming back from the market in Chaudi, I was passing a cow and he suddenly turned towards me and I slammed on the brakes and flew over the handlebars to the pavement. Messed up my arm pretty bad. My wrist still hurts me sometimes to this day.

Beware of the Cow's!
