Radiology , x-ray technology, orthopedics

A U.S. orthopedist just saw the ankle fractured while traveling in India in late December. Off came the hard cast. "Are you sure it was really broken?" The only evidence that it had ever been broken (instead of sprained) was the x-ray taken in India immediately after the accident. The Indian orthopedist had said that the x-ray clearly showed that the ankle was broken. He said it plainly showed a complete break; no question of a hairline fracture. The U.S. orthopedic surgeon scrutinized the Indian x-ray. "It's fuzzy," he says. He takes a new x-ray. The new x-ray is crystal clear, and it shows no break and no evidence of a past break. It's less than 4 weeks since the accident. "We would have treated that as a sprain," says the American orthopedist. "There might have been a hairline fracture, at most."

A broken ankle is a hassle when traveling in India. Consider, for a start, the problem of using Indian toilets and of taking showers if you have a hard cast on your leg. A sprained ankle is no fun either, of course, but it would have been easier to deal with.

I bet you're furious.

But look on the bright side; you'll have a damn good laugh about this story many times in the future.

Not that I'm laughing now, honest.
