Rabies vaccination

Hi,

I need your advice please:
I'm going to India at the end of September for 25 days, I'll be in Dharamsala and Rajastan and I have doubts regarding the pre-exposure vaccination for rabies. Most of the people I know travelled without it, but I know there are a lot of stray dogs and monkeys and I read stories about monkeys attacking people.
Do you find this vaccination necessary? I'm also afraid from its side effects...
Are the monkeys' attacks very rare and if it happens is it very hard to be treated in India?

Thanks,I'm a bit confused and scared...

I guess it really comes down to personal choice. Many people travel without it. Look at the bottom of this page and you'll see a long recent thread on this subject.

Thanks and another question

Thanks for your reply, I read the useful threads, I didn't know it's such a debateful issue, I guess many people are confused because there is no clear recommendation from the travel doctorts.
I'm still left with my question regarding the side effects of the vaccination, I read worried information, but I guess it's very rare. Can someone share with me his/her experience?

Thanks

BTW this forum is amazing

my husband had no reaction to the jabs i had some redness and swelling at site reduced by the application of ice.

we preferred to have the jabs which was good as my husband was attacked by a monkey whilst visiting shimla, he was taking a photo of one monkey when another ran across the road behind him and jumped on him
