Yes; I was also thinking now Smoothie is gonna contract rabies just to make us all feel bad.

Sorry, but speaking for myself I really didn't want to put you off of the idea. You initially wanted it; maybe go by your initial gut feeling and just persist with it then. I mean what does anyone of us know anyway, really. And finances aside, I'm very sure it can't hurt, indeed. & Every little bit helps, and all that jazz.

And remember with most of these medical questions, the question is never what happens if you don't (by statistical odds or the constellation of the stars or whatever, or by certain well-advertized preventative means even) contract those diseases; it's what happens if and when you do.

Nick-H,(or anyone)

So you think it would be just as simple to get the 3 shots done in 3 different places?

I just have this feeling that the doctors would be confused? If all three injections are the same I guess it would be impossible to screw up. But if the 3 shots are somewhat different I could just see me getting the dosage of shot one on my 3rd injection and then something bad happening. I'll be sure to ask my doc if all 3 shots are exactly the same. If I could get the three done in different cities that would be great.

How confusing can it be?

Now I'll qualify this by saying that I've not been to India, but we're not talking about a market trader selling you this stuff under the counter. Surely if they have made it as doctors, they cannot be so dim as to not understand a simple concept such as "I have had two of the three rabies injections on these dates, I now need the third"?

I don't think there's a problem.

Even if they are different, ask the first doc to give you a prescription for the three shots, individually --- then you just tell the pharmacy which one you need.

Even one doc could get confused!

At this point you might as well get them for peace of mind.

I had no IndiaMike.com to probe for general consensus or any concern shown from my travel clinic doctors for my initial trip to India in '95 about rabies contraction. Afterall I was only staying & working in Delhi and living in a 5* deluxe.

But after arrival I discovered that my Australian colleagues had all had the pre-exposure rabies shots ..... it was only after learning this that I put any thought at all into the dilemma .... but not too much mind you!

Pre-screening appears to vary greatly from country to country for these shots anywhere from - 'you're going to India? - then you need these rabies shots" - to maybe yes/maybe no - depending on how you answer questions such as ' what is your business in India? Rural or City travel? How long are you going for? and/or Do you normally make friends with, pet or feed strange animals?'

I hope that you will get & carry your International Certificates of Vaccination booklet issued by the World Health Organization. As you get your shot, the doctor enters it into this permanant record. You can get all three in different places and you will have a record of each one. It's a record that you can keep forever. http://www.who.int/bookorders/MDIboo...k/06901000.jpg

The booklets are hard to find for some reason, but you can get them from any place/doctor who gives the Yellow Fever vaccine. You don't have to get the Yellow Fever vaccine to get the booklet. You cannot buy the booklet, they are only distributed as above. I have filled my first booklet and am 1/2 way through my second. (I just counted and I've got 43 shots recorded )

There's even room for your eyeglass prescription.

I would ask every doctor or clinic you deal with for the booklet on the odd chance they'll have it.

I never take this precious record with me anymore but I do bring a copy of it. I never want to have to get a shot I already have and it's the only way to know as time goes by.

It is true that the pre-exposure rabies don't last forever, but before I would get a booster I would get a blood titer to see if I need one.

When you get your first shot, in the packaging is enclosed the full instructions about how and when to get the next shots. The first doctor will/should write the dates for the whole cure and any other instructions. The leaflet also list the brand, type, etc. of the vaccination. It is a small leaflet (the size of a flat match box), easy to carry with you. So the next doctor would know exactly what to do.

By the way, new research on rabies is going on: http://www.rabieschallengefund.org

Thanks Birds for such an interesting link. I recently saw a story about how vets actually don't know how long all the annual pet vaccines are effective and there are some vets who believe the "annual" vaccines should be every 3 years. I'm sure the pharmaceutical company would not approve of this.

The only alternative currently is to get the pet a blood test and titer it for effectiveness and that is much more expensive than getting the vaccine

I would just wait a couple of years but every kennel in the US requires annual vaccines. So our poor senior citizen dog will just have to keep getting annual vaccines. The rabies vaccine fortunately is every 3 years.

Well put Peak. The irony is that on the spot situations are complicated. I never felt any risk from dogs (just loud peacocks)in villages. My relations place in what is now urbanized have a nasty stray problem. None of us have have had the vaccination including the doc..

My London vet didn't believe that every year was necessary, but the insurance companies did, and could refuse to pay claims for utterly unrelated stuff, if the innoculation was not done every year.

Same problem here. I need to vaccinate my dogs every year to be able to show a record in case I ever need to bring them to Europe.

Many vets even say that when ever your dog is bitten/been in contact with an un-known dog you should give a rabies shot booster.
