Questions on malarial transmission

Hi everyone,

Here are a couple things that I thought I knew, but upon thinking about it, realized I didnt.

Is malaria in India only transmitted by a certain type of mosquito (I know there are various types of malaria, but I am referring to any and all types)?

If so, are these kinds of mosquitoes only active at a certain time of the day (day, night, or both)?

I think that's all I know that I don't know for now!

Thanks again,

-Dave

Yes.

Different species of mosquito spread different forms of malaria.

I think the malaria-carrying mossies in India are night-flying, but we have day-flying ones that spread other diseases.

There is a huge amount on this forum on the subject, but it is mostly to do with whether or what anti-malarials to take.

For further research into the strains and species, suggest you start with Google

Malaria mossies are generally active in the evening whilst Dengue Fever mossies are active during the day. I think there is also one daytime mossie that carries malaria!

I agree with Nick .... Dusk to Dawn for the Maleria carrying mozzies. But day & night for 'other disease' carrying mozzies.

All over India (well anywhere that is under about 2500 feet) and all year!

That's what I thought. Thanks everyone - I guess I'll have to be cautious about being bitten at all times. Thanks again,

Dont' let your guard down with those little ba$tards - they feed mostly dawn, dusk, nightime & in shady dark nooks 24/7 - all you wanted to know and more about the anopheles:

They wait for the plane doors to be opened .... then they strike!

One of the little bu99ers got me (on the hand) between getting off the plane and the baggage hall in Calcutta. (Midday in February)

I should have put the anti-mozzie cream on while still on the plane, instead of waiting till I got to the baggage hall.

Thanks for the link PeakXV. And yeah, I hear the airports can be pretty bad. I'll be landing in Delhi, and I intend to cover myself in repellent before getting off the plane. Not *too long* before landing though...in consideration of my neighbor
