Thanks for the tip, oldhippie.

I want a dentist that charges Indian prices for foreigners and has the strictest standards of hygiene.

Actually last time I went to my Aussie dentist I got to see the autoclave accidentally and it looked dirty to my eyes! It was all cloudy...

GoanDentist...

Do you (or any other qualified Dentists you know) use Nitrous Oxide instead of needles?
And if yes, would this be a possible alternative in Root canal?

My boyf just came back from the Dentist, who told him he needs 6 fillings and 3 root canals. Eeeek!

Thanks in advance

Georgie

Samsara
I recently had a wisdom tooth pulled at this place and they were very good. I was charged Rupees 400 which included a check up a week later. On my second visit I had him scale and polish my teeth and was charged Rs.200
The people at this clinic are fluent in English and very helpful.
I am very picky when it comes to doctors and dentists and I went through a list of 18 dentists before I decided on this place.

Good Luck
Bill

Hi Georgie,

As far as I am aware there isn't a single practitioner in Goa using N2O or other sorts of anesthesia accept local anesthesia at the moment. As far as using it for a root canal ..its possible but local anesthesia is a better option.
I have recieved quite a few requests from my patients for nitrous oxide sedation and as such both my goa practices will start N2O from november of this year .

Best of luck with those fillings.. dont get too scared its not that bad !!

cheers!

Its unfortunate that your dentist does not clean his instruments. The reason i commented on this was that you should look for pre-packaged instruments at your dentist. If you dont see it insist that it be done for your next appointment.

Now let me explain this pre-packaging thing >>> Its a simple process wherein instruments to be sterilized at packaged in a transparent pouch which is autoclavable. This pouch has to be sealed/vaccum sealed, and then put into the autovclave. There are colour codings on the outside of the pack and it shows you whether the instrument is sterile or not. For example in my system I use pouches from DISPODENT , which shows green before autoclaving and brown after its done. This way your sure the job has been done properly. Also there is no risk of post-sterilzation contamination in way of dental ancilliaries using hands to tranfer instruments or unclean trays etc. The pouch is ripped open infront of you so you can see that its 100% sterile.. now thats HIGH standards in Dentistry !

cheers !

Goandentist... In my childhood it was common for dentists to give general anaesthetics in the form of N2O. (I hated it: I was terrified the first time I had a tooth out with only a local, but I'd never go back to the gas).

In recent years in UK there were some deaths and it emerged that dentists administering this were not trained anaesthetists. I don't think dentists in UK are allowed to do this now unless they have a qualified anaesthetists aattending.

What's your view?

N2O ..should dentists be doing it ??

Nick, I agree with you completely that N2O sedation is not a dentists domain nor does he recieve specialized training during his course to administer N2O safely. But with the advent of continuing dental education, which is now mandatory in most western countries; india to follow soon, it could be said that these systems are now being re-introduced to dentists and specailised training being imparted.

Having said that , I personally have engaged the services of an anesthetist to do the job for me cause its not my area of expertise. My philosophy being if you cant do the job 100% dont do it and make a mess of it !!

Cheers !

Hmmm.... I was once told by an anesthetist, "It's my job to keep you alive"!

Sounds like you are spot on about this

Few tips !

I thought of a very simple condition one i see almost everyday in my practice and thought i should make a little note here.

In India, the general poplutation is not really interested in preventive dentistry and will show up at the surgery only in extreme cases of pain. Many of them present a large sweeling on the face in realtion to a tooth exposed that would probably need root canal treatment.
The point i want to make here is most of the swellings on the face come about by patients applying some ointment on the face. Please do not use stuff like Vicks, Iodex, Tiger Balm or any other product that is used in routine muscular pain as you will only cause a problem. What these products do is increase the blood circulation to the face ( the face being the most vascular area in the body..u will notice how a cut on the face or head will bleed so much ) and therefore the swelling.

summary: Never use topical creams or anti-inflamatory muscular creams on the face !

Cheers !

My wife has been referred to a periodontist (spelling?). Are such specialists available in India? We will be in Gujarat in July - in the Rajkot area.

Any addresses in this area, please.

Common Denture Problems Part-I

Sore spots in the mouth

Pressure and / or rubbing is occurring in one specific area, usually a result of chewing but may also be due to clenching of teeth or bruxism (grinding the teeth). Other causes may be hard foods (like small seeds) getting under the denture. Sometimes the denture teeth need adjustment.

Treatments include: relief of pressure area and/or balancing of the occlusion (bite) to Improve the seal.

Soreness at corners of mouth

Loss of vertical support for the denture (bone loss) can cause the mouth to “over-close.” This can change the way the lips seal together and cause saliva to pool at the corners of the mouth. The excess moisture in this area may cause the skin to become irritated and may increase the risk of a candida (fungus) infection. The soreness may also be the result of a vitamin deficiency. The vertical dimension generally needs to be increase with reline, rebase or replacement. This may involve the repositioning of teeth. Any fungal problem or vitamin deficiency needs to be treated.

Lack of suction or adhesion

The bone and mouth tissue shrink causing the original fit and contact of denture to be lost. Lack of suction or adhesion can also be caused by dry mouth (Xerostomia). This is most often caused by certain medications. Without proper saliva, denture fit is not ideal due to the lack of “seal” that moisture provides between denture base and tissue.

Treatments include: reline, rebase or replacement, artificial saliva, and /or the supervised use of denture adhesives.

Denture slipping and moving

This is due to shrinkage of the jawbone and surrounding gum tissue. The gums and bone do not support the denture in speaking or chewing. When the denture is not in its proper position or does not stay in proper position, it moves causing cheek and tongue to struggle to form words and control the denture. This generally necessitates a reline, rebase, or remake of the denture
