Oh probably true.

I picked my dentist on personal recomendation, and it didn't seem apropriate to bargain. Many practitioners may also have different charges for locals. I don't mind that.

Nick, I need a dentist in Chennai. A piece of tooth has fallen out. It's not major, all it requires is a small filling. Any addresses? Thanks,
Colin.

What to expect at a Dental Surgery in Goa

Well judging from the ongoing thread ...price not quality of treatment seems to be whats really on everyone's mind. Yes its very cheap to get your dental work done in India ..Goa in particular becomes a hot spot because of direct charter flights all thru the season, so obviously its the Goan Dental Surgeries that will be tried and tested.

India is now a preferred health giver state for the United Kingdom and as time has proved the quality and standards in India are upto the mark and can compete with any of the EU states. Having said that you will find "quacks" around .. always insist to see their "degrees" not "diplomas". Medical/Dental professionals do not obtain diplomas in this country. If he says he has a diploma (as his basic qualification) ..think twice.

Now coming to what you should expect at any Dental Surgery in Goa ...
1. Cleanliness
2. Punctuality
3. Quality
4. Price
5. Sterlization ..autoclaving at 121 degrees, use of UV lights
6. Flexibilty of the surgery to work around your holiday schedule. (dont make yr trip a dental oriented one , most surgeries (including mine) will work even into the wee hours of the morning just to finish your work in time )

Something i have always told my colleagues is not to charge for an intial consultation even if its a waste of your time. Most of my patients (and i see a lot of UK nationals) have this thing that their dentist back home never has the time to talk to them about treatment options or explain the procedures they are to perform. Well dentistry today is like any other business ..u have the right to choose and you must be satisfied with the work thats done.

I will start a thread on common dental problems and treatments thereof soon ..do check .

In reply to ColinT, I used to go to a really good dentist in Madras, called Dr. Arun Chittanranjan. His clinic is somewhere between Raja Annamalaipuram and Mylapore..sorry, cannot remember the exact address. I'm sure he will be in the Yellow pages. Good luck!

I have had dental work done on a number of occasions in Delhi and Thiruvananathapuram - I was very pleased with the quality of work, and the price.

How to find a reliable and safe dentist - the simplest way is to phone the UK or USA embassies - they keep a list of the OK guys, though in Thiruvananathapuram, I went to see the head of the British Council Library there, and asked him which dentist he personally uses.

As a resident in Ireland, complex dental work in India, such as bridges, is well worth doing - its actually cheaper for me to fly to India and get the work done, than get it done in my local town !!!

How to get more Europeans interested, especially those with no experience of India - hmm that's a difficult one !! Unfortunately, they DO think of mud huts, people sleeping in gutters, and rusty tools. Blame Michael Palin - he's always showing stuff like this !! I think the only way you can get people to let someone inside their mouth is to sell it as a package with a VERY reputable Western tour-company. Sorry - that's just the way it is. 99% of people in the west think that most Indians live in the slums of Dharavi etc.

Dentistry in India

Dentistry in India is indeed very affordable. had the oppurtunity to visit a dental surgery in the capital city of Panaji whilst in goa. The place was clean and the doctor efficient. I had four dental implants placed in Goa, my wife three. The surgery was atraumatic and the followup uneventful.
We feel good with the implants in place at appox. one tenth the cost back home.

Thumbs up

Infact we had gone there for cleaning and filling of my teeth. The dentist advised me implants or bridges for us. We were impressed by the dentist the need to have a complete set of teeth. The fees were also reasonable or affordable thus we opted for the surgery.
I would have no hesitation to recommend the dentist to anyone visiting Goa and interested in dental treatment.
