Probiotics and Nutribiotics
nutribiotic, extract of grapefruit, or acidophilus or kiodophilus? Has anybody takent these before eating food in India...Heard it's a good way to stay un-sick for as long as possible. They are over the counter culture/baterica pills.

i started off taking acidophilus, but stopped because i was eating curd on a daily basis, which is just as good, if not better.

It's yoghurt - made fresh every day, so has plenty of probiotic bacteria in it. You'll find it on every menu, and if you have a serving every day, it'll go a long way towards keeping your gut flora balanced.

oh you mean like yakult and other bacteria drinks? i think they're probably a good idea before you go out to india. i took boots probiotic caplets for about a month before i left. may have helped me climatise to the food when i first got there... can't have done any harm, because the food was no bother to me when i got there

Any edge you can give yourself is a good idea. Also handy to have on hand to restore balance should you be unlucky enough to get any sort of stomach upset...

FOOD, Street FOOD and pills pills pills
I am going to start tomorrow. I don't arrive in Delhi until the 26th but it'd be nice to have a few weeks of probiotic under (or in) my belt. Any other advice for FOOD while in India. I have always been a very daring eater...street food only for months in SE Asia but I hear India is different? Anyone

If you're recovering from diarrhoea, plain curd and rice is a brilliant way to get your stomach back to normal. Make sure it's fresh, though. Curd sometimes tastes a little bit off in India - that's the last thing you need if you've got a wonky tummy.

While acidophilus caplets from reputable makers do work, they probably won't work well enough to make much of a difference in India. But you never know.
Local yoghurt is your best bet. If you're not a "yoghurt person", then work yourself into it gradually by, say, mixing some into curried rice dishes. Another good way is to just take it by the spoonful and swallow it, period. Like it or not. |

I took grapefruit seed extract and probiotics daily on my last trip.I started the probiotics a couple of weeks before I left. Not sure if they really work or if I just have a strong constitution but I did stay healthy for 4 months ( except for a 4 hour bout of something one night...) Did eat curd regularly too. Also used the grapefruit seed extract for soaking/washing fresh fruit so ended up eating grapes and lots of fruit which was nice. Also took along oil of Oregano which is supposed to be good at killing all sorts of things and I would take it as extra protection if I had eaten something that tasted a bit off or if I felt a cold or something coming on.

i used GSE (grapefruit seed extract) the minute i felt something amiss in my gut and it took care of it lickety split. it's properties are quite strong, more of an antibiotic than a probiotic.
the second time that i got sick on my last trip it snuck up on me so quick that i did not even have a chance to use GSE until i felt too nauseaus to do so. So, for me, taking it right away was the cure.

I am definitely using probiotics and starting them before I leave (altho I already eat yogurt and drink kefir daily). The ones that have a bacteria count of over 1 billion, ones that dissolve in your intestines, not the stomach, and ones that don't have to be be refrigerated (obviously) are recommended.
Some recommended brands are Culturelle, Enzymatic Therapy, and Jarro-Dophilus. |
