probiotic products in India?
Hi! I'm wondering if one can get probiotic products in India?
They are suggested to avoid/minimise Delhi Belly... If they can be bought there, how much do they cost? Also, I know there are lot of threads about malaria, but being lazy I'll just ask here:What would be the best prevention drug for malaria and can it be purchased from Delhi? What kind of side effecets have you experienced from Malaria drugs? Can insect repellants with DEET be bought there ? Prices? Also, about vaccinations...I decided to have only hepatitis A shot...still struggling with the thought of this Japanese brain fever, but I don't have time for it.I'm covered for everything else except Hepatitis B,Cholera,Typhoid fever and the Japanese fever mentioned above...Did I forgot something? Should still go for Typhoid shot? I don't want to over-react,especially since I'll be staying in cities and most likely eating in restaurants (I don't know if this helps any) but I try to avoid getting sick also... What words or names on menu should I avoid when eating? I mean products that include icecubes, dairy products (I wish to taste Lassi though ),uncooked ingredients... |

Bring your own probiotics.
They are available as local products but the quality is not the same as available abroad, you better bring your own. . . .

the best option is to get a HepA jab. It works very well. My brother and family live in the UK and they get it.

Agree with AvidT: bring those probiotics with you. I found taking them for a month before I go and while I'm there has been a very good thing!
I've bought mosquito repellent while on the road, and it seemed fine, though don't know if it has deet in it or not. Wish I could remember the name of the Indian brand....it was a cream in a tube, and it actually smelled nice. |

It's almost funny that you bother so much about probiotics and yet let go HepB, Cholera and Typhoid, all of which are rampant everywhere in India.
You can have probiotic ice cream from Amul, though. I think staying off street food is the safest bet. If you need to have chaat, have it in a clean place like Halidram's and that's that. Same goes for Lassi et al. It's fine to have milk products and even ice cubes are nothing but a big scare, provided of coures you choose your restaurant with care. In case of doubt, follow the snob in you. What's good for the locals is not always good for you. This mantra got me through six ice-cube-filled-years in India without a single stomach infection. As for Malaria, preventive drugs are not necessary. Go for stand-by. Carry repellent, sleep under Mosquito net. |

you should definitely get BOTH hep a and hep b - see if you can get the twinrix vaccine (has both). it's also probably a good idea get your boosters, especially DPT and MMR. it makes good sense in general, but especially when travelling.
i'm a big supporter of getting all the vaccines that you can, but i think the ones above should be the bare minimum. to me (as someone who works in infectious diseases) probiotics seem like kind of a waste of time. just eat yogourt. MF |
