Ladakhis still blame almost every health complaint on catching a chill. Most commonly, any stomach complaint is blamed on having been in the cold a few days ago. What about Americans in India and their ever-present giardia? Other travelers seem to get it, maybe one in a hundred travelers. but Americans in India all think that every stinky sulfurous diarrhea they get is giardia (when it's probably simple E. coli)
Goodness, you have correlated claims of giardia with nationality?
Given that it is a specific parasitic infection, I would have thought that claims would only follow proper diagnosis and tests. On the other hand, I don't think there is anything simple about e coli: it is a potential killer.

So, you have a spoken to how many Americans about their poop problems?
To make a statement like that, I'd have to say thousands & compared it to equal numbers of other nationalities.Speaking as one of those Americans, I have NEVER heard another American say that. Of course, my sample is very small, just people I've met while in India or who have been there.
In the old days, everyone of every nationality said they had dysentery after every episode of Delhi belly--which they surely did not have.

When I had giardia my samples had to be small to fit into the little glass jars.I am not, and never have been, American.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Reason: Clarity...
Giardia is what we Americans are all warned about getting in the wilderness here in the states so it no real surprise that get translated into giardia everywhere.
My sulfurous belches and accompanying digesting broken glass like pain was caused by our friend the Protozoa. After that I shied away from drinking out of the same bucket as the goats.

Hi guys - have been home from India now for about 10 months yet still experiencing ongoing (sporadically) bad vomiting and diarrhea as I had there. Someone has said it could be termites? Any ideas? Thank you!

Well, they ate part of one of my window frames and started burrowing through the house looking for more tempting pieces of wood. You'd better call pest control...
Or, seriously, somebody might have meant parasites.
What does your doctor say? You might need to see a tropical medicine specialist.

Either a tropical medicine specialist or an infectious disease specialist or gastroenterologist. You don't want us to diagnose & treat you!! Really.
You'll probably have to give a stool sample, blood work & possibly other more invasive tests (endoscopy) depending on the results of the easy ones. Get started right away, it's never good to wait too long with those symptoms not going away.It might be something simple, you won't know until you see the right kind of doctor.
