Pregnancy/Immunizations/malaria meds
Hello all--I'm so glad this website exsists! There is alot of conflicting health info out there when it comes to India...in the end, I know we've all got to make our own decisions.
With that said: My newish husband and I received free plane tickets to India this summer from a mileage wealthy relative. We plan on landing in Mumbai and heading to the South...with the full knowledge it will be a rainfest.I've been to India twice in the past and never taken malaria meds (just watched out for the lovely flying beasts as best I could). I believe I will be pregnant when I travel in July and I've read that pregnant women/fetus are more at risk for malaria. I've also heard chloroquine is the safest option for pregnant women. Also, I've heard it is unsafe for pregnant women to take the typhoid vaccine/tabs... anyone with knowledge/experience out there? Thanks in advance... |

I believe that chloroquine is no longer an effective anti-malaria drug for India...(maybe i am wrong??) I would check with a traveller's clinic in any case about travel and pregnancy.. ![]() |

I would strongly advise you to speak to your Doctor / Travel Clinic. They know best.

Pregnant women are more at risk because prophylaxis has not been proven safe for them or their fetus. If you were to catch malaria the treatment options are again limited and pose a significant risk to the unborn child. Now more than ever it would be wise for you to visit a travel clinic.
