Potty Training for the Incredible Indian?

I travelled by the Mangalore - Trichy Express on 25.04.05 from Mangalore to Calicut. I used the loo for the short job while the train was just pulling out of Mangalore at 6.30 a.m. The loo was resonably clean. At round 9.00 a.m. I felt the urge and once again made a beeline to the loo, alas the loo was a mess. Why? Oh God Why? is it that people are not aware that the water supply to the loo is only to flush the damn thing?

I notice this every where I travel in India. In airports (specially in Metros), railway stations, bus stations, rest rooms at hotels etc., the loos are a big let down.

Incredible India/Indians?

Someone had said something rather smart about this syndrome but I cannot remember it. Anyway, the gist of it is that you are likely to find what you are looking for. Send two guys to the Taj - one looking for chaos, filth and harassment is more likely to find it than the other person whose "mental model" helps him to find and enjoy the timeless beauty of the Taj.

That does not excuse dirty toilets - but why it happens and the rest...is a long discussion around resources, population, education etc. - why waste IM space for it?

You obvisously haven't seen the 'how do you wipe' thread!

Not all Indian toilets are dirty... but I have been puzzled by coming across filthy toilets in otherwise clean and respectable private houses. And it's not the sort of thing you can ask someone
