Post India belching problem

I know this sounds crazy, but I got back from India several months ago and since then have had this very uncomfortable belching problem. I've been to the Drs and tried prilosec along with other meds, but nothing has helped. Figured I would try this board just in case anyone ever had this happen to them so I could learn what to do about it. Thanks so much.

Have you been tested for parasites? You might consider that ...

Get to a travel clinic specialist and tell them (as you can best recollect) your travel itinerary & the progression of symptoms. They will be more plugged in to the latest illnesses/remedies .... much more than a GP would be.

Best of Luck!

I honestly have never heard of India causing some belching problem--unless you got the habit of showing appreciation for the meals there.

Travel clinic seems to be the best answer but I go along with Gauhati Boy!! You've picked up the habit!!! You will have noticed all bodily functions are clearly visible and audible here unless in very refined company and even then you can't be sure!

When I traveled in India with my ex-wife she developed the same symptom, burping constantly. we figured she must have come down with some kind of stomach bug or something, and after a while it went away.

I heard that if an Indian spider crawls on your cheek when you are sleeping, you get the belches for weeks. Maybe that's it.

My partner had stomach issues after India too - belching, and then bringing up the meal that she just ate.
A tablespoon of Slippery Elm powder in a glass of water, drunk just before each meal, fixed the problem.

It is true that if you visit another place, you get the local biota in your system and might cause some disturbance even if you are travelling from Germany to Spain.

Sounds like your doctor has diagnosed heartburn/reflux based on the medication you have said he prescribed. It certainly could be an intestinal or stomach parasite though, particularly if the prescribed medication is not helping.

I don't think advice from a travel forum would adequately compare with advice given by your local physician. However, your doctor may not have considered parasites.. You can and should ask for further testing if possible.

There are some very simple and non invasive tests that can be performed without sticking a camera down your throat.

Some parasites can cause nasty complications if left untreated for long periods.

My tummy has never been the same since I got back from India. I have been tested for parasites and it was negative. I am learning to live with it and certain foods aggravate it more than others. Probiotics also help.

Have you been tested for giardia? I was in India in 1980 and came home with smelly(sulphuric from memory) burps. Giardia is a water borne parasite, I think, so previous advice re tests sounds good.

could also be giardia. only a doctor can give a proper opinion though, possibly supported with a blood test.
