Thanks. But the reason I asked is because I'm considering the daily/weekly combo. I know you can get chloroquine everywhere, but it isn't any use without the daily pill (paludrine - or maybe it has another name?), is it?
No worries on Lariam for me cos I've done it before. |

Chloroquine, once a week, is just fine if there doesn't happen to be any chloroquine-resistant malaria where you are.
Do not take chloroquine alone unless you are advised by a LOCAL doc that it is OK for that area. And I mean local --- like living in the same part of town. It is really not a good idea for the traveller.

Yeah, sure. The standard thing in India for years has been paludrine with chloroquine, no? I'm on Lariam anyway, but my gf doesn't like the idea and doxy is a no-no if you like to sunbathe a bit.

paludrine with chloroquine --- still recommended by British Health Service. In fact they now recommend nothing for much of India.
See this page to download their wonderful guide to malaria. Do check the updates on their site, as one or two areas, including parts of Goa have been upgraded to higher risk since the booklet was published. |

Thanks - very useful indeed! So... is proguanil (paludrine) available in India?

OK, so seems like we should buy this here and then pick up chloroquine in Mumbai (I have some tablets left over for week before)?

Just follow individual reactions as even Malarone can cause some people problems. I suspect Chloroquine will get you by and with no previous problems... Paludrine is just, if fading gray cells persist, a combination of Chloroquine and something else. A stalwart here can look it up as I am doing a 3 day intense statewide meeting. Pray for us in the midst of severe budget cuts..

Thank you. Budget cuts seem to be a worldwide thing right now.

Just took my larium.
1st day was pretty horrible, felt really spaced out. Had some pretty messed up dreams, but other than that they are fine! |

From what I've read on here, I think you can get it almost anywhere, no?

Its not as common as Doxy but is said to be available under the generic name Mefloquin. Good luck on using that..

Ah, I am corrected. While Paludrine (proguanil) is often paired with Chloroquine it is separate. Note an interesting comment below..
"Chloroquine and Proguanil are no longer considered effective for most areas of sub-Saharan Africa, South-east Asia and tropical forest areas of South America. Seek advice from InterHealth BEFORE ordering." |

Paludrine/chloroquine combo is still the normal recommendation for Indian travel in UK (except Assam). What I'd like to know is how easy it is to find paludrine in India (obviously you can find chloroquine anywhere).
