I've been in touch with a friend in Mumbai and he has confirmed for me that Malarone is not currently available there. My parents are in the Middle East and Malarone is also not available where they are, so I'm think it's North American & European access so far. . .
Doxycycline and Larium are available in India, but Doxy is already very cheap in Canada. |

I say emphatically; don't bother with the malaria tablets. There's lots of documented research on the negative side-affects of anti-malarial tablets and for some scary stories about these, just punch the appropriate words into a search engine of your choice. It’s not pretty reading . Me, I took them ten years ago, got very sick (nausea, headaches, that kind of thing) and haven’t taken them since (that’s ten years spent in SE Asia). I’ve just taken really good care not to get bitten. Easier said than done but not that much easier.
The kind of mozzies that carry malaria are only biting from dusk to dawn so I recommend, as well as spending a bit of your hard-earned and investing in a good quality mosquito net and some mosquito repellent, cover up at dusk and if you’re an early riser at dawn. Covering up really just means long sleeves, trousers and socks. If you’re careful then you’ll seriously limit the number of times you get bitten (Even if the little B*****S do get you a few times it would be highly unlikely that you’d contract the big M) and you won’t have to worry about, or suffer, hair loss, migraines, rashes etc.. Anyway don't sweat it too much Joel Asia Travel Ezine

I think the above is one dimensional to say the least. There are different treatments and none is perfect for all. However, malaria is best minimized in importance by those who haven't had it. I was as flippant as above and now take doxy happily. Each treatment has side effects for some people. I wouldn't take Larium because it affects many seriously. But, for me doxy is a minor hazard compared to what I went through. Malarone, if you can afford it, is even more limited in side effects. Inform yourself and make an individual judgement and do use a net..

Yeah def one sided (or dimensional), that's why I posted it. Its my one dimensional opinion. You presumably caught malaria? Did you take the precautions I mentioned? or not? Really not trying to score points but am genuinely interested. Where did you catch it ? and how did you treat yourself / were you treated? |

This is balderdash and even with such precautions bites occur. However, I do emphatically believe in taking just such precautions. I had only a mild case in Hyderabad (Secunderabad) and was far from being able to treat it myself. I had the presence of a doctor (family) and ever loving nursing from my late mother in law..

I took Doxy with no side effects. I have red hair and very fair skin and didnt get much sun at all. I took it for the month that I was in India and for about 2 weeks after I got home (was supposed to take for a month after, but I got lazy). It cost me roughly $5 USD for a 30 day supply in Mumbai.
I have no idea about the increase in yeast infections though as I am a male ![]() |

Mod Note: If you are offering yourself as a contact for obtaining meds. via this Forum, coconut tree, you will be suspected of 'commercial activity' and banned!
Malaria is all over India - both north and south, but it can be seasonal and more prevalent during wet, humid times. Wherever there are puddles around, and the temperatures are warm, there is the possibility of malaria.

Chloroquine is not effective in the NE of India so be aware of that. Malarone is not available in most countries but is available in Singapore at a similar cost

Lariam gets a bad press, but I've taken it a number of times with no ill effects noticed. Weird dreams, yes, but actually those were quite nice :-)
I'm deciding now whether to go for Lariam again (Mumbai, MP, Goa and further south) or the Paludrine/Chloroquine combo. |

I have been in India for a month now. Malerone is not available but Mefloquine is easy to get. It's about Rs 160 for four tablets.
Not having any side effects, including weird dreams. |

I have a friend who now lives in Mysore pretty much year round and of course does not take a malaria tablet everyday for the obvious reasons...she is just cautious about her clothing and always in long sleeves..she also uses the Avon product called "Skin So Soft" it is suppossed to have some anti-mossie repellant in it....
works for her!! Just thought it would be helpful info for some of you. But when I travel to India..which is every year..I always, always without even thinking about it take Malrone tablets... No side effects..no problem~ namaste~ |
