Are there any poisonous insects, spiders or snakes I should be on the watch for while visiting Kerala?

Yes there'll all be there waiting. Just don't show any sign of fear & hopefully they'll leave you alone,,,,,,,,,,

You'd have to tell more about where you staying.

In a five-star city hotel or even and expensive resort? No.

In a village, or while walking in a reserve, yes.

I'm staying at VKV cultural ctr and I'll be walking around the villages, along the river. I'm just wondering if I see a spider on my bed, do I need to worry?

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I too would be interested if there are any dangerous creepy crawlies about in South India. Not much of a spider fan!

Spiders? Yes. Check it out.... http://www.wii.gov.in/envis/rain_forest/chapter7.htm

If you find any in your room a glass and peice of paper is the way to get them out, unless you're petrified of spiders in which case i'm sure you'd find someone willing to oblige....

Snakes? Yes. But as said before in rural areas and reserves you're more likely to encounter one (or more?!!) then in built up areas. Retreat or walk around them if you do cross paths. More likely they will slither away as they see you. I've only encountered one snake in 8 months travelling in India.

Don't be put off, just keep your eyes open so to say and stay alert when off the beaten track.
