And I can't believe that I asked my Malayalam-speaking wife, and that's what she told me.

Come on lets face it ... if you could find one of those clothing optional Ashrams tucked away in the himalayas that have an overly abundant female population - you'd wave the fitness stipulation.
Ye of so little faith, I am deeply hurt, there is however a small possibility that the monks/priests/guhrus might have been Jack Daniels talking big, happens every time I let him out of his bottle.

That said, give me the name of a quiet serene ashram and I'll use a couple rocks as dumbells and I'll jog to the nearby village

don't be surprised if you don't.

I am an ex-fitness instructor and have been active for over 20 years. I had ab surgery a number of years ago and it took me a full 8 weeks, despite having a solid core, to recuperate. I recuperated much faster than someone who never works out, but it was still slow going, slower than I anticipated.

any type of ab cutting is nothing to rush through, I don't care if it is "only" a hernia.

That's exactly why I want to find an ashram where I can stay in a room by myself and concentrate on recuperating. When I start feeling better I will excercise as ability permits.

I will pay my own way and do any chores asked of me, but the thought of going out in the streets and getting jostled around is daunting indeed.

I do understand that I may be underestimating the recuperating period, especially for the extremely strenuous motorcycle ride I'll be taking, but I have to get the hernia fixed and I will not come to India if I can't go to the Himilayas, if I need more time to recover I'll take it, but I will make my trip no matter how long it takes

So you can see why I need a safe place to recover without getting jostled around, I need this trip for various reasons and I have no time constraints. Perhaps an ashram looking out over the ocean, I'll work in the kitchen ;-)
