Pharmacies: anti-anxiety/painkillers - more info?
Just wondering if anyone knows how strict city pharmacies (i'll be in Delhi, among other places) are about requiring prescriptions for different types of medicines? I'm interested in stocking up on my prescriptions while in India for cheap... Some of my prescriptions have expired but would still like to buy up during my time in India. Mostly anti-anxiety/pain type stuff eg xanax (generic: alprazolam), vicodin (hydrocodone-acetaminophen), others?
Thanks in advance for any info... |

In my experience they are not strict at all, but then I never tried to buy anything 'heavy'. I don't suppose you can buy morphine (or pharmacies would aquire a permanent queue of junkies...) but I think you'll get most stuff.
You might even set up a business reloationship with someone who will post stuff to you in the future. Anyone tried this?

Buying Alprazolam may not be difficult but Hydrocodone-acetaminophen could be. Since your prescription has expired do you need to still take these?

Neither of them are something I'm in dire need of, but I do like to have them around, and I wanted to take advantage of what I've heard are incredibly low prices compared to the ludicrously high prices in the States. I've also heard you can pay a "doctor" at some pharamcies 50 Rs to buy a "prescription" - just wondering about etiquette within pharmacies, too, I suppose. As in, if I walk in without prescriptions how do I make my requests to the pharmacist, etc?

So long as you dont intend to buy heavy stuff as Nick said there should'nt be a problem to get a prescription from a local doctor. Buying large amount may also pose problem. Yes the medicines in India are very cheap indeed. You will have too many activities around you while in India so you may not need these any way.

Take your old prescriptions. Show them to the pharmacy or, if you have a problem, show them to a local doc and ask him to give you his prescription.
One snag that you might come accross is that brand names are likely to be different here. Make sure you know the generic name for anything you need. |
