Peanuts
hello all,
I know that there have been posts about thus before, however none of the people who asked about it have stuck around so I can't ask them if things went OK for them (let's hope their absence doens't mean things didn't go OK for them). I am travelling to Gujarat for three months and my girlfriend is visiting me for three weeks in the middle. The bad part is that she has a peanut allergy which is quite serious. She will of course have her epi-pen but this only buys time, doesn't solve the problem. I understand that Gujarat may be a bad place to be as they use groundnut oil almost exclusively for frying. Does anyone have any idea which areas of India may be the least likely to use groundnut oil, or have peanuts in their food? Has anyone survived India with a peanut allergy? Sorry for the repost but my questions are slightly different and I want to see if anyone has been through this before. Thanks, Thane |

bumpign this up
I am just bumping this in hopes that someone will have some comments. In light of the lack of responses I posted the question at the TT and actually got more comments!!! Frightening. But to be fair farangsville did PM me about her experiences... so at least now I know someone returned safe! Anyone else have any peanut experiences or advice?
Thanks |

Seems like this has been discussed at length around here. Did you search?

I think most food is cooked with ghee. Southern indian food also uses coconut oil, and peanut oil a bit too, but to the best of my knowledge (im no expert, but am a food freak!) peanuts arent used that much.
is it all nuts or just peanuts?

Merchant. Yes I did do a search, as I said in the beginning, however none of the people who responded had actually been to India with a peanut allergy, and most of those who had asked about it seem to have disapeared. I wanted to hear what their experiences were. Also, I know that Gujarat uses primarily peanut oil and i wanted to know which states didn't.
Thanks Sticky. Peanuts are the bad ones (ie. death) but other nuts cause mainly discomfort. |

Groundnut oil(peanut oil) is used in Karnataka too for cooking. The coastal regions of karnataka use coconut oil more, whereas the other areas use peanut oil
