I'm going to India soon with my sister, probably heading north... The problem is that we are both allergic -deadly allergic- to peanuts and other nuts...and probably to lentills too (to a lesser degree). When we looked up the food section in the lonely planet yesterday, we flipped out noticing how important are these ingredients in indian food. Do you know any dishes that aren't any risk for us, or any other advice at all? I thought about bringing a little stove to cook our own things...How are the markets? Of course we have seringe in case of emergency but the whole situation of not knowing what we're eating brings up a paranoia...

Forget about eating out, it's that simple. There are lentils in everything, they use peanut (i.e. ground-nut) oil for cooking, and it would be insane to rely upon communicating with people who use fifty different languages to ensure your food was lectin-free. In all honesty, I'd recommend giving Asia a miss.

It's possible to travel India sticking to the tourist routes and just eat western food. In many of the tourist restaurants the western grub is usually better than the Indian food. Personally I really don't care much for Indian food and will only eat it like once a week and am real fussy about it. Over the years I have had my fill of dal and rice and if I have to eat one more grain of rice....well you know.
So I think it's possible to avoid it. Mike |
