should be mods are drips.

PS: BB, here's a good recovery wish for the young ones.

Electral, like somebody said earlier, is widely available. (No no, not Carmen Electra, Electral )

For the first 2 sentences - thanks very much for the tip. Appreciate any local tips and will look out for it(we currently have them sucking on Gastrolyte iceblocks).

For the second part or your message in brackets - Damn!

Yes,bb and Captain, I had to restrain myself severely when I phrased that first bit about mods and drips!!! I'm in the same position as you,bb, I feel.
Best wishes to children for quick recoveries.. there seems to be quite a bit of sickness going around at the moment here, too.. I think the sudden very cold changes have reduced immune systems.

Thanks for this thread machadinha.

And Nick, whilst I agree that the homemade formula isn't ideal, in my circumstances it was the only option. Actually it wasn't, had I had my wits about me I would have asked the cabin crew to put out a call to see if any passengers had any diarolyte, but I had no wits whatsoever, so I didn't.

If you're not sure if you need rehydration salts, the first thing that happens that I notice is that I am thirsty, and no amount of water quenches the thirst.

The next stage is a pounding headache, and then muscle cramps. I had got to this stage, dammit. After this things go rapidly downhill so GET IT SORTED ALREADY!

Really, once you've got that stuff inside you you'll feel better in 20 minutes.

To the British couple returning from Kerala on 9th Feb on Gulf Air- if you happen to read this by any chance, thank you very much for your advice on the correct quantities of sugar and salt, it's much appreciated.

Hmmm, yes, when there is 40,000 feet vertically between you and the nearest pharmacy, anything with sugar and salt in it is better than nothing, and having a home-made recipe of the approx right concentrations could literally be a life saver.

Did you make it out of those little salt and sugar packets they serve with airline food?

or if there was a doctor on board.

Sailor's quick fix... a glass of water, a big pinch of salt and less than a fifth of a teaspoon of sugar, squeeze half a lime in it, sip slowly. (less sugar is better than more sugar, though you need some). Continue till you feel good.

Avoid drinking huge quantities of plain water.

And if throwing up is becoming a contributory factor in dehydration..eat sliced ginger sprinkled with juice from a lemon.

After a bit, eat a banana. Potassium.

(Which possibly only Mach will understand)

Well fortunately I have never experience the extremes of the condition, however sometimes I do feel I am dehydrated when loads of plain water is unable to quench my thirst...it happens after a few drinks...however I keep on sipping the water slowly and eventually start feeling normal..

Is it something to with normal water (tap water) and bottled or purified water..I mean that tap water has impurities, and along with other things it might have some things positive as well...however purified water might be void of all negative things but positive aspects as well...?

Hangovers imply dehydration. The sugar and salt thing will help more than huge amounts of plain water.

Tap water . The last thing you want is a bad stomach.

You were severely dehydrated Karuna, by the sound of it. Muscle cramps and headache is one of the things I get here when extremely hot temps. and I don't take the Electral stuff. It's the body sweating out all those healthy minerals.. magnesium and potassium are supposed to be good for cramps - is there a natural source of magnesium, rather than taking tabs.?
I do all that regime you have posted, Captain, in times of slight nausea and too much sweating from heat. Ginger is marvellous for settling the stomach. I know potassium in bananas but haven't come across a good magnesium source.

Yes. I decided on two packets sugar to one packet salt after advice from the aforementioned couple. I have no idea if this helped or not as I passed out shortly after take off!

I limped my way through baggage reclaim at Heathrow taking long long breaks, couldn't walk far, and as soon as I got to the arrivals hall headed to Boots and picked up a ready made packet (own brand, of course. It's 50p more for the brand name, never understood that- it's the same stuff!). Been OK since. Well, not OK, but not dehydrated. Never quite sure how long to leave these things before consulting a doctor. Think I'll go tomorrow. Ho hum. A gift from India!

Of course, thirst is to do with the body regulating its fluids, but dehydration is beyond thirst --- and not feeling thirsty would be a big danger sign.

Drinking too much water is something that makes me feel very ill indeed. For giving medical samples, I have twice, recently, had to drink more water than I am comfortable with.

The first time I made the mistake of drinking two litres of cold water quickly --- and after a few minutes, nearly passed out.

My wife had to fetch biscuits and fruit juice to restore my sugar levels before I was capable of getting out of the chair.

And it still took another half hour before my kidneys responded with the sample.

a week after my return from india, still sick with salmonella, I told the dr. I was still "dying of thirst" so she immediately hooked me up to another IV right in the office, so that was TWO I needed. she also said that the "brain fog" I experienced (before my first "drip" in Chennai, before I got on the plane) was the start of deliriums, due to massive dehydration, so if your brain feels totally discombobulated, get an IV!
