Blackbird... yes; if there was not so much conflicting "official" advice even, then this would not be such a hugely popular discussion here on IM.

What can we do? Nobody can give the absolute, definitive, 'correct' advice, perhaps because it doesn't exit!

This is what is the problem, you are saying it is dubious..I might have agreed with you...

But see this particular case and give us a better option...other than the doctor of course...

Even I was surprised... 3 years ago the advice was to take prophylaxis (Lariam or Malarone) in the whole area north of the line Goa-Chennai, that's why it is important to update the information frequently. The doctor at the institute for tropical diseases explained me that the advice is given according to how many travellers returned with a disease from a special area in the last months.

I have to add in Germany it is not a government advice, as our medical system is private (not like in UK). But research on tropical diseases and treatment is mostly by university institutes, and they are not private.

Thanks for all the replies, they have been most helpful.

On balance I'm going to continue with Chloroquine only for 10 days, until I reach Delhi. I'll seek specialist advice when I get there.

Thanks again

Proguanil availability.

When I was in Delhi a few years ago I stayed longer than intended and had to restock with Proguanil.
The pharmacy didn't stock it but ordered it in for me and it came 2 days later.I think the pharmacy was in the same street as Keventer's-Radial Road 3, although any pharmacy should be able to order it.
The price was EXACTLY the same as the UK - which presumeably explains why desi prophylaxis is chloroquinine only.

This is still the recommended combination by UK doctors except for Assam. In Assam atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycycline OR mefloquine are recommended. (link)

However, for travelling in large parts of India (roughly south of Mumbai, with the exception of Goa, and north of Jaipur), the use of antimalarials is NOT advised. (malariamap)

What about a sticky malaria thread with all links for reliable websites (listed by countries) on this topic? The advantage is: they will update their website regularly, but if we are posting facts here, they might be not up to date after some time...

Recent outbreak situations cold be added.
