Probably nothing to do with running out of pills though, more likely it's just Rishikesh the place where people love to get sick!!!
My wife doesn't get sick too often but in Rishikesh it happens everytime!!! Even I got sick after a very tasty thali at Choti Wallah oh well!!

Most pharmacies have a thick book (in English) called CIMS88 that cross-references all the trade names and generic names of drugs. It is updated several times a year.

If you ask to look at their CIMS88 book, you will be able to look it up for youself, and the chances are that they will have, or be able to get, the particular drug you want.

You can also look for drugs to treat particular conditions. There are sections for every ailment, i.e. Allergic Disorders, with drug names, contra-indications, recommended dose by age, safety alerts, etc.

Just for the record: My 6 month supply of Enzymatic Therapy's "Acidophilus Pearls" did start to go off at about 5 and a half months of hanging out in my backpack. They got a little dark tinge to them and I started having a few more "bouncy" digestive days then before, so I tossed the last few. Hoping to find a good Indian alternative for the last month and half of my stay here.

After my 9th visit to sub-continent I can say that I've never had the shits. People nevertheless say it's bound to happen. I'm sure I've been lucky.

I take a good probiotic (acidophilus and bifidus bacterium) - but I also use this product whilst living in UK! You don't have to be travelling to enjoy its benefits.

As a precaution against 'off' food in India and Nepal, I take a capsure of HCL & Pepsin with a main meal. This 'ups' the natural production of hydrochloric acid which is secreted by the lining of the stomach for breakdown of protein during digestion.
But not everyone can get hold of this product (which also helps destroy toxins in the stomach) and has to be ordered through a nutritionist.

Eat curds at least once a day.

Probiotics in India

I will be taking doxy (thanks to those who replied to my last post on the availabilty of doxy in India)for quite a few months and would like to take a daily probiotic. I have bought some heat stable one's here, but do not want to take a five month supply with me. Does anybody know if heat stable probiotics are available in India? If so are they found at a pharmacy?

There are some products available here.

On a quick Google India search I found http://www.nnindia.com/products_jd.html which is based in Chennai. Another is http://www.relbio.com/html/biochemicals.html.

There are two brands I found that are made in India are Jarro-Dophilus EPS and VIBACT DS. Unfortunately the Jarro brand can not be bought at a retailers in India???? I don't know about the other one, they haven't written back. Where do people usually buy these products in India? I can usually get them at a health food store or a pharmacy.
