Question No Spleen!

Hi, I am a physically very fit person, who runs and cycles. I have no spleen ( lost in accident many years ago) ......... I have never had any problems, but I have to take penicilian evry day.

My question to anyone who can help me is: what real risk am I at in Goa? I have a burning desire to go there and eventually settle some where like there....

One would be most greatful if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

Many thanks

i think you got to figure out and ask your doc what medical facilities you may need in case you do have some problems. and identify a doc in goa soon after your arrival whom you can go to if you do.

but, if all you need is penicillin daily, why should goa be a problem?

Thanks for that, yes, I understand with regards to the medical facilities in Goa, I think my main concern is malaria, as this is alot worse for those with out spleens as I am led to believe.
I dont worry, I just like to be prepared and knowledge gathering from all you experienced people around the globe.

Regards

did some internet reasearch.. wow.. mankind does not know what the function of the spleen is! and, "It is increasingly recognised that its absence leads to a predisposition to certain infections" . Is there any proof to this?

I personally believe that the medical community (atleast most of the practicioners here in the US) will keep prescribing drugs, if it means more money in their pocket. Most of these are unnecessary and a some of them are quite damaging.

If I were you, I would go ahead and have a great time in Goa. BTW, I am no doctor.

yep

To you oh great one, thanks ................ yes, people dont really understand the function of their spleen, and what you can get if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time!lol ............ I was fine for years and then all of a sudden the medical boffins said that I needed to take penicilian for the rest of my life, so it is.

Im not put off with going to where I want to go, I just go ......... was in africa, got a bit spooked when 2 of my mates got malaria!!! .....

My dream is to go to Goa and check it all out, I am well travelled and I am looking for a place to retire in the next 2 years or so, I am tired of working to live and giving all my hard earning money to Mr Blair and his gang who spend most of it on their girlfriends and having a ball..... no thaks enough is enough . time to go for me...
Thanks for your reply anyway..... its better to burn up, than fade away!

Goa is a Pretty safe place.
You will hardly get malaria or anything like that there from stroling around.

Penicilian everyday? WOW! Thats pretty strong stuff... Dosent your body get resistant eventually?

Go there for a short trip and check it out, its not really that wild.

Dr.I (no sorry I forgot, Im Not a real doctor... Hardly a fake one either)...

Ps. So Thats what that Tony phoney dude is doing with your money huh?
Spending it all on his ugley girlfriend is he?
Buying her fish and chips and all kinds of bollocks?
Thats outragous!

you can take precautions against malaria like

-anti malarial tabs but they dont always work
-anti mosquito cream, specially outdoors in the dark hours.. available in india anywhere
-care at night while sleeping... mosquito net (some hotels may have them )or anti mosquito mats (the goodnight brand in india is available anywhere, and though it may have long term use problems, it may be the lesser of two evils.)

by the way, the electronic anti mosquito things dont work. I know!

i would just take some of these precautions and have a good time.
