India - is pretty safe

Hi,
I could not go through the whole convo going on. but i am replying to the very first post. By the way, I stay in Mumbai.

So, in mumbai during jan-mar it will get dark after 6 - 6:30 pm.

All the restaurants will open only after 7:30-8:00pm

You can grad a quick dinner comfortably between 8:30 - 9:30pm

People in India are really helpful, but never trust Taxi and Auto rickshaw men, especially if you are a foreigner. Either they rob you of your money or take you to a isolated place. (p.s: not all rickshaw and taxi people are like that)

So best option is, travel by Train & bus within mumbai. its safe and quick travel option.

Regarding the initial days of getting comfort. Get back to me with exact dates you are coming on ..and i can arrange someone/someplace to be with or stay at.

Chennai ..i am not really aware of.

Mumbai has active night life

Mumbai has a very active night life and the 5 star restaurant/pubs remain open all night. Other places remain open till 12:30.

Many people go out pubbing at 10:00 pm after finishing their days work.... its very common.

Mumbai is very safe for the most part. Just avoid isolated places at night.

Off-topic, perhaps, but on hearing my plans, my mom went "They'll kill you!"

On my return, there was a little altar with the map of my tentative route that I gave her & the postcards & letters & gifts I'd sent, and many a story-filled late night, with her having seen plenty an Indian documentary in the meantime.

I don't know, I wouldn't worry about it so much (but do keep your senses about you like you would anywhere else). The ones who make it back in one piece still far outnumber those who don't, as far as I know (and witness this site).
