Nicotine Patches available in India?

I will be in Mumbai next week, my brother in law wants to quit smoking, and we thought I should bring him the patches for quitting. Turns out they are very pricey here in USA. Are they available in Indian medicine shops? if they are, approximately how much Rs.?

Another related question; does anyone know of a portal, website, forum something (!) I can browse to find out what medical products & medicines are available in India, prices & Indian names. So far indiamike has been my best source of info, but it seems to me that there should be more. I tried MedIndia, registered & everything, but it turned out a dud.

I will also be looking to buy a wheelchair, walker & some medicines. My trip is about bringing my mother in law home to Mumbai, making sure she has the medical things she needs, not really a vacation. I'll be in Mumbai (Vashi) for 2 wks with relatives, my fun will be going to the tailor, shopping & going to Puja's!

Hello 2cents, Wonder if you could look up a medication for me. I have to take a lot of "Salofalk" (Enteric coated 5-aminosalicylic acid 500mg) every day and it would be nice if it were available locally. It may also be listed under the name Mesalamine (USP). Many thanks !

I gave up smoking over a year ago but the only way I could do it was through Nicorette inhalers which are nicotine cartridges you pop into a cigarette shaped white plastic holder and smoke like a cigarette. It's just nicotine like the patches but I needed the smoking action and the only reason I haven't relapsed is I know if I have the urge to smoke I can go and buy a pack of the cartridges and smoke them instead of ciggies. It's only nicotine like the patches just delivered in a different way. The patches wouldn't have worked for me.

Thanks 2cents. I have to take six a day, so it soon adds up. Cost here in Canada is five times as high, and it's a lot to carry during extended trips.

I quit about 6 months ago, but I'm off to India next week, and I must say that I fear I might get slack.
'Waiting' is what does it for me.
And we do a lot of that in India. (Sorry the train is delayed by five hours)
How will I wait with out a fag?

Hi Tukat, I have quitted smoking six years ago (I was an hard-smoker, about 40 cigarettes per day!) using Nicorette chewing-gum; I would suggest these more than patches because they keep your mouth busy so that you will not eat compulsively all the time. I have LOST 10 kg. after I have quitted smoking, using Nicorette and in parallel starting praticsing sport (running, cycling); this helps a lot in having a good motivation to go on when you feel that your lungs are getting more and more efficient and you are fastly recovering all your breathing capability.
However, I would NOT suggest to start this during a trip. You need to be really relaxed to quit smoking, although with the support of Nicorette, and things like waiting for a train or a bus (especially if you are not in Frankfurt but in Delhi...) could give you the urge to light a cigarette even if you have a gum in your mouth. To quit smoking take few days out of work, go for long walks, relax, listen to music, breathe on open air... 2-3 days and you will be definitively FREE, then it's just a matter of time. I quitted Nicorette after few months, but it became an habit, you can do it also after 2-3 weeks reducing the number of gums everyday.
But, again, don't do it during your trip in India; it could be not successfully, and this would demoralised you in trying again.
Good luck!
Gianni

Gianni, thanks for your tips, they are good ones and I will pass them on to my brother in law in India who is quitting smoking, not me.

I've never smoked cigaretts myself.
