Another new combined pill to combat Malaria has been developed by pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis.
It seems that combinations of Artemisine with classics anti-malaria drugs is the way the different companies are investigating. Full information: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4423709.stm |

Nice one Jorg
Though the article is a bit vague! It seems to say that this is for the treatment of Malaria rather than the prevention which is great but I hope never to get that far!! It will be a god send for Africa though, where someone every 30 seconds dies of Malaria, that's horrific!! Just a thought but I was in the chemist a few weeks back and the local Indian preventative seems to be Chloroquinine Sulphate, I wonder how this combination stands up with WHO??? As far as i understand, artemesia has so far been licensed for treatment of malaria, but licensing is still in the process for its use as a prophylactic. Apparently v successful treatment drug - i hope that's true, coz i carry it instead of prophylactics!

I read somewhere that India leads the field in artimisin research as a prophylactic. Though they admit that a fully tested product is still some three - four years away.
Combining with some of the better known drugs is fine but it seems to defeat the purpose for me. We are all searching for a prophylactic that doesn't have all the side effects that the mainstream drugs seem to be batched with. This is why I had such hopes for Artimsine combining it with other drugs won't get rid of the side effects I fear. Still any research is good reserarch lets hope this leads the way to a new prophylactic minus side effects! |
