Thumbs up New Mosquito Repellent Approval

ATLANTA - After years of promoting the chemical DEET as the best defense against West Nile-bearing mosquitoes, the government for the first time is recommending the use of two other insect repellents.

Repellents containing the chemical picaridin or the oil of lemon eucalyptus offer "long-lasting protection against mosquito bites," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, adding that repellents with DEET remain on the agency's recommendation list.

Some news for travellers....

I know some people bad-mouth Odomos, but it works fine for me. It comes in lotion or cream both of which are comfortable to use, it's available everywhere and is cheap.

How good is the mozzie repelant? how often would you need to re-apply it?

I saw that in today's paper, and it's certainly worth checking out, though I have no problems with Cutter's, which contains DEET.

By the way, these new repellents were recommended to us in the context of avoiding West Nile Virus, which reached California last year. I wonder if they are available in other formats besides sprays, which I do not use.

Works fine for me as well and as you say its cheaper than the repeallant on offer in the UK.

In the UK repellant is usually £2.99 for a small spray or cream. You can buy more than a couple of tubes of Odomos for this amount in India.

I used Odomos for most of my trip and it works fine. It's a damn sight cheaper than anything you'll get in UK although I did sometimes use the repellant spray i got as a just incase from a camping shop in UK.
You can buy Odomos in any chemists/ pharmacy/ some stores too.
As for how often you need to apply it, well if you sweat normally, apply it as often as you need to. I found that under the straps of my sandals and watch were the first places the mozzies went for as that's where I sweated the most.
It didn't damage my clothing, melt my shoes or burn my skin off.
Curiously enough for some people, I also didn't take an anti-malarial and although i was bitten about as much as anyone else I was around, I have not contracted malaria or dengue fever which other mozzies also carry but at a different time of day. You decide about that but as far as I can know, nobody and i mean nobody that I met and who spoke English, was taking anything at all.
Repellants, bed net, clothes at evening times........ in other words deterrents but as for other chemicals which you'll probably forget/ not bother to take after a few days.......upto you.

I'd like to revisit this thread from 2005: Has anyone had any recent luck using Picaridin against mosquitos in India?
