I use a neti pot religiously - I find it helps me control my (mild) allergies, and also helped my body deal with the air pollution in India. I had one of those little immersion coils, which works for boiling small quantities of water (1-2 cups max). You can buy one in India pretty easily, or from a travel catalog or outfitter in the US. Mine blew out, and I had to buy a new (Indian) one of inferior quality to the American one, but it still worked. I only had a little steel cup, and the Indian one would shock me if I touched the cup while it was plugged in, while somehow, the American one didn't do this. I also brought an electric kettle. Again, you can buy one in the US (my parents in Massachusetts use one of these in their kitchen) or in India. I preferred this, as it could boil a quart at a time, quite rapidly (although in hotels with crappy wiring it sometimes blew the fuse, and again, the American made one eventually blew out, possibly due to the voltage difference - I didn't have a voltage converter). In addition to facilitating my neti-potting, it freed me from the need to buy bottled, as I could boil for myself. Probably safer anyway. The ideal one would have a steel container for the water, so you wouldn't be boiling water in plastic. But I'll take increased cancer risk over ameobic dysentery any day.

thanks for the tips, bosquef!
Hey, did you ever buy a neti pot in India? Seems like the kind of thing you could find easily. Maybe in the same type of store as the imersion coils? The less I have to lug over the better! |

I saw one neti pot in Delhi in a little 'kitchen' time steel store where I bought my insulated tiffin, but that was the only place. Keep in mind I wasn't looking for one, so I'm sure there were more, just those were not in my line of sight.

Buy a small imersion heater in India at an electrical shop Indain made around 40 Rps China made around 50 Rps. If indian ask the Guy to open the end where the wires are conected and get him to solder the wires to the pins, will help it last longer.
By the way also use neti pot, got good one in India (Rishkesh market) made from stainless steel hold around 1/2 L.find it in shops that sell plates and what not mainley from metal. also in copper. Must add that wife WILL NOT let me use it in the house, get banished to the far corner of the garden! |

This neti pot is actually very easily available in Delhi and it used to be common household item to drink water..
For the uninitiated here is an image of the same... http://www.christinas-home-remedies....s-neti-pot.jpg Btw, there are lot of variants in the market, however this image shows the closest model to the originals i have seen... After seeing this many Indians would agree that their Mom OR Grand-mom had one in her kitchen... |

Good to know I can easily get one in Delhi or Rishikesh. Mine is pottery and would likely break in my backpack. Stainless steel - fancy! Thanks for the soldering tips, dcamras, and your wife really doesn't know what she's missing out on :-)

I've used a microwave to heat the water. But, your post does indicate if you will or won't have access to one.
